Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Environmental Safety Sustainability and Risk (ESSR) Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is seeking a self-starter to serve as a safety and health coordinator to implement exposure monitoring and health hazard evaluations, respirator fit testing, EHS inventory of monitoring equipment and personal protective equipment. Test chemical safety equipment (hoods, eyewash stations, showers, etc), conduct detailed safety inspections of functional areas to identify compliance findings, investigate incidents to determine causes and communicate corrective measures, advising multi-faceted units (e.g., committees) on program compliance. Complete other environmental health & safety duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (including licenses, certification, etc.):
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
  • At least three years of related work experience (e.g., safety of facilities operations, assistance with safety program development).
  • At least one year of direct work on database systems for safety management.
  • Experience in program development, conducting training presentations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Interpersonal relationship building, direct input into databases (SciShield) and the management of safety information, analysis of safety information summaries to result in decision-making.
  • Organizing, scheduling and coordinating safety and health inspections of diverse university functional areas, and including problem solving for identified deficiencies.
  • Ability to prioritize work and objectives, make independent judgment decisions.
  • Working knowledge of IH equipment (e.g., sound dosimeters, IAQ equipment, Portacount.) Diagnosing incident causes, and communicating control methods to prevent recurrence.

Preferences:

Preferred Education:
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in science-related major.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in a University setting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
  • Understanding of machinery and safety controls.

Physical Demands

Able to perform extensive standing, walking, climbing, and lifting. Must be able to lift 35 pounds. Will occasionally be required to work off-hours and be subject to on-call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents occurring at the university or affecting university personnel. May work in dirty, dusty or uncomfortable surroundings. Must be capable of working in temperature extremes and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized. Must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection. May be required to obtain special training and/or certification needed to fulfill the duties of the position as appropriate.
