2023 Internship - Mechanical/Aerospace/Computational Engineering Intern

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you searching for an internship experience that will include impactful engineering work?

Does making meaningful contributions to projects that span from submarines to surface ships, UAVs, aircraft, missiles, and spacecraft sound like a dream job?

If so, and if you’re pursuing a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, we’d love to have you join our team!

We are seeking interns to help us perform computer-aided design (CAD) and analysis of mechanical systems. For example, as a member of our team, you'll work with lead engineers to conceptualize solutions to challenging mechanical engineering problems. You'll model a detailed design in CAD and coordinate the manufacturing of what you created. From there, you'll assemble and test hardware systems and when applicable, document the results. You will be joining a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who are among the world's best. We are passionate about making critical contributions to our nation's most critical, technological challenges.

As a member of our team...

  • Your primary responsibility will either be the computer-aided design of mechanical systems or to run computational simulations and perform analysis.
  • You will work with and actively collaborate with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists on a daily basis.
  • You will generated the files and documentation necessary to facilitate the fabrication of your designs.
  • Depending on what you create, you will 3D print your models or initiate the machining of parts.
  • You will order the necessary hardware to assemble your designs, plus perform the assembly and testing yourself.
  • You will propose and develop new modeling frameworks for predicting the response of sophisticated systems to conditions including but not limited to mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electromagnetic stimulus.
  • You will give presentations to communicate results to team members.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field.
  • Have a passion for CAD and practical experience using CAD software, possibly in support of class projects, graduate research, or during a prior internship
  • Have a passion developing physics-based simulations and applying data analysis to solve problems, possibly in support of class projects, graduate research, or during a prior internship.
  • Have scientific/engineering programming experience, the ability to work in one or more programming languages (MATLAB, C/C++, Python, FORTRAN, …) or software commonly used in computational science and engineering
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Have CAD experience in either SolidWorks or Creo Parametric.
  • Are experienced or interested in performing finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Have experience in performing large-scale simulations on high performance computing systems.
  • Direct experience using LS-Dyna or other finite element analysis software packages.
  • Proven ability to contribute to team based software development.
