Brief Summary of Work for this Position
We invite applicants with research interests in light stable isotope geochemistry with emphasis on anthropogenically derived contaminants (e.g. per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The successful candidate will develop a novel isotopic and molecular forensic model to trace anthropogenic contaminants in the environment. The position will be a combination of laboratory and field activities. A variety of analytical and geochemical instrumentation will be used for the project and include gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography and bulk/compound specific isotopic ratio mass spectrometry to construct the model. There will be opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students as well.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Ph.D. in geochemistry, chemistry, or a closely related field is required. Ph.D. degree prior to commencing the two-year appointment starting between November 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023.
Strong command of the English language.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Center for Marine Science (CMS) is recognized nationally and internationally for conducting research that contributes to understanding environmental processes and problems. The Center strives to increase knowledge and cultivate public awareness about coastal and marine sciences through research, education, and outreach. This includes a variety of fields such as physical oceanography; marine and coastal biology; marine, atmospheric and natural products chemistry; marine geology; and environmental sciences.

Currently, more than 100 active research programs are ongoing at CMS, and over 140 scientists, staff, and students at CMS. The teaching and research facility located on the Intracoastal Waterway in southeastern North Carolina features state-of-the-art core facilities in spectrometry and spectroscopy, light stable isotopes, DNA and water quality analysis as well as running seawater systems, a coastal workboat fleet and a wide range of oceanographic equipment that are available to all CMS researchers.
