Associate Director of Development, Research Innovation and Impact

Job Description

The University of Arizona Foundation is seeking a motivated and goal-oriented professional to join the Sr. Vice President for Research, the RII Development team in supporting our efforts to significantly increase philanthropic support and to have a positive impact on achieving strategic growth for the Office of Research Innovation and Impact (RII/Unit). The Associate Director of Development (Associate) assists the Director of Development and other members of the RII Development team in planning and implementing all development activities. In addition, the Associate will work directly with major gift prospects of RII to secure gifts of $50,000 or more to further the goals and objectives of the Unit. This position will be assigned to various RII units as determined by the Director of Development. Assignments will be determined annually during the Development Planning process. For the current fiscal year this position will be assigned to the Norville Gem and Mineral Museum.

The Associate will gain an in-depth understanding of the Unit’s donors and prospective donor pools, as well as the Unit’s overall fundraising processes, strategies and goals. The person in this role is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the Unit Development and Administrative team, Center Directors, Researchers, and other University of Arizona and Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement (PAE) personnel as appropriate. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create and sustain personal relationships. The position requires travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays, in addition to work on evenings and/or weekends as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

Responsibilities

  • Actively work with the Unit Development Team planning and implementing all development activities.
  • Work toward building and managing a major gift prospect/donor portfolio of 100 personal meetings per year minimum.
  • After an initial 3- to 6-month onboarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of 100+ current or prospect donor personal meetings and presentation of 15+ proposals per year, with a focus on qualifying major gift prospects and securing gifts of $25,000 or more, and an expectation to raise in excess of $750,000 annually.
  • Maintain up-to-date donor/prospect portfolio, including contact reports and proposals.
  • Develop and execute strategic, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for assigned major donors and prospects (individual, corporate, and foundation) through personal visits, letters, phone calls, email and other methods.
  • Actively work with any assigned area of focus and associated staff in expanding, cultivating and growing philanthropic support through their advisory boards.
  • Participate with the Unit Lead DO in the strategic planning of new projects and initiatives.
  • Partner with and effectively utilize the development professionals and resources of the PAE.
  • Work effectively as part of the greater University Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent writing, speaking, interviewing and listening skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain powerful and productive relationships with donors as well as development colleagues and UA faculty and staff.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, and different planned giving methods.
  • Ability to translate technical scientific information into lay language for potential donors.
  • Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
  • Ability to make introductory phone call to get appointment with donor prospects.
  • Ability to make good decisions and exercise judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including working on weekends/evenings, overnight stays, and travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with demonstrating success in securing major gifts in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in constituent databases.
  • Experience applying fundraising principles and procedures.
