Overview

This is a Med Tech III position at DFCI - Chestnut Hill. Full-time dayshift, Monday-Friday (40 hours). No weekends, No holidays.

The Medical Technologist III is responsible for following procedures and performing tests on body fluids using automated analyzers and manual test procedures under minimal supervision, in accordance with laboratory procedures. The Medical Technologist III is responsible for adherence to the laboratory quality control policies and procedures to ensure reporting of accurate and timely test results. The Medical Technologist III will assist in the training of new personnel and carry out special assignments/projects for the department. In addition, the Medical Technologist III will assist with correlation studies, assessment of new instruments and materials.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform various routine and complex technical procedures on body fluids, utilizing laboratory equipment.
  2. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab instruments; identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or report of test results and either correct or immediately notify supervisor; document all corrective action when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  3. Report accurate laboratory tests in a timely manner following technical procedures, using the clinical lab information system and/or back-up to enter and verify test results.
  4. Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations.
  5. Maintain laboratory instrumentation records as well as quality control records related to test performance according to lab procedures and as directed by supervision.
  6. Participate in the proficiency testing program.
  7. Maintain competence; attend all required safety/infection control/departmental sessions and further continuing education.
  8. Comply with all policies regarding the confidentiality of patient information and the lawful use of any computerized patient data.
  9. Assist in training of new personnel on laboratory instruments and procedures, information systems, and laboratory practices according to establish guidelines.
  10. Assist with correlation studies, assessment of new instruments and materials.
  11. Hematology Lab: Demonstrate expertise in morphology sufficient to serve as a resource for other technologists
  12. Chemistry Lab: Perform linearities, correlation studies.
  13. Carry out special assignments
  14. Participate in individual projects for the department, such as inventory, as requested with limited supervision.
  15. Act as the Lead technologist in the absence of the technical supervisor when necessary.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Qualifications:

Minimum Education: AS, MLT (ASCP), BS, MT (ASCP), or nationally recognized equivalent preferred; degree must be in a clinical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.


Minimum Experience: 5 years of clinical lab experience in chemistry and/or hematology required.


License/Certification/Registration: ASCP or equivalent (AMT, NCA) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Expert knowledge of laboratory and medical terminology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use sound judgement, communicate effectively and maintain high standards for patient care.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a heavily team-oriented environment; seen as a leader within the team.
  • Ability to work efficiency and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Capacity to remain flexible and multi-task is key.
  • Some training skills with the ability to mentor and assess workflow as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills.
