The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory (SO) is seeking candidates for one Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the data analysis of UV spectroscopic/imaging data.The candidate will work specifically on the analysis of archival FUSE data to study warm-hot halo gas around nearby galaxies as well as analysis of archival GALEX data to work on the 3D structure of the diffuse Galactic ISM.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to integrate into the dynamic and inclusive SO UV group consisting of Profs. Erika Hamden, Carlos Vargas, and Haeun Chung, as well as a number of postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates. The SO UV group is leading Aspera, a NASA-funded SmallSat mission to detect and map warm-hot OVI emission from nearby edge-on-galaxies, and is expected to launch in 2025. The group is also involved in FIREBALL-2, a NASA-funded balloon-borne stratospheric telescope to study the faint CGM around z~0.7 galaxies. The group is actively working on the development of UV detector and grating technology as well as new small/large class UV mission concepts. The successful applicant will be encouraged to take an active role in space mission proposal writing and new concept development.

The position is for 3 years. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field before the commencement of the position in Summer or Fall 2023. A fraction of the time will be made available for independent research and new projects in related areas.
