The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for an Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dr. Travis Hein's Lab to serve as a member of the Medical Physiology team. Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Research Associate, under general supervision, is responsible for investigating the role of arterioles and venules in healthy and/or abnormal blood flow regulation in diabetes, specifically in pig and mouse models. Highly motivated candidates are sought to be involved in a multi-investigator collaborative research program. Project involves determining the cellular/molecular mechanisms and pathways for constriction/dilation of retinal arterioles and venules that promote retinal ischemia and consequently impact neural retina function in early diabetes; presenting research in meetings/conferences; preparing manuscripts; and performing day-to-day lab maintenance and record keeping.

  • Appropriate doctoral degree

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements or Factors:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and endure prolonged standing or sitting

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Basic cell and molecular techniques

  • Handling Rodent (mouse and rat) and pig models

  • Experience with isolated microvessel functional studies

  • Experience with animal surgery, tissue isolation

  • Experience with siRNA transfection

  • Experience with fluorescence calcium imaging

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Responsibilities: 

  • Basic Science Research Duties - Independently perform experiments for assigned research projects that include isolated microvessel vasomotor function studies, real time PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence imaging, cell culture studies (primarily endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells), ELISAs, and siRNA transfection of cultured cells. Maintain the records of data collection. Basic surgical techniques and tissue harvest; maintaining the animal logs. Coordinate experiments/schedules with research staff, students and postdocs and animal facility staff.

  • Data Analyses  - Survey literature and research design. Analyze and interpret data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assist with the preparation of research literature during manuscript and grant submissions and for presentation at scientific meetings.

  • Laboratory Maintenance - Order laboratory supplies and maintain lab inventory. Prepare laboratory reagents/solutions, and maintain laboratory equipment. Coordinate day-to-day laboratory maintenance and maintain laboratory safety manuals. General lab cleaning including benches and glassware.

  • Professional Development - Present data at national and international scientific conferences. Prepare and submit manuscripts to scientific journals. Attend weekly Medical Physiology Seminar Series and meet with guest lectures. Performs other duties as assigned.
