Job Description

The Utilities and Maintenance department is responsible for the efficient operation, management and upkeep of all campus electricity, heating and cooling, as well as the repair and upkeep of all electrical, mechanical, carpentry, plumbing and roofing maintenance at the University.   Within Utilities and Maintenance, the team of engineers, power plant operators, zone managers, technicians, mechanics and administrators service over 11 million gross square feet of campus facilities and lead the University’s efforts to reduce its carbon emissions footprint by 50 percent by 2030.

The Sr. Environmental and Safety Specialist will be responsible for
  •  monitoring reporting, recordkeeping and training of staff with regard to Environmental and Safety compliance issues as they relate to the Utilities & Maintenance operations. 
  • With regard to environmental compliance this will include all medias, including but not be limited to air, water and waste. 
  • This position shall have knowledge and understanding of local, state and federal regulations associated with environmental and safety issues. 
  • Promote, monitor and direct best management practices with regard to both environmental and safety issues. 
  • Assist with the conceptualization, design and implementation of projects and programs in support of current and future applicable regulations. 
  • Provide in-house expertise on departmental projects and activities in order to ensure full compliance with regulations and best management practices. 
  • Work with consultants and counsel (both internal and external) on issues as applicable to environmental and safety compliance. 
  • Provide regulatory agencies with reporting, and comments on pending and future regulations. Lead the Facilities Design & Operations Safety Committee as Divisional Safety Coordinator and ensure that all departments in the division are fulfilling their safety obligations. 
  • Work with consultants to perform periodic environmental and safety audits and follow through with recommendations to improve policies, procedures and processes

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in applicable discipline. 5-6 years experience
Familiarity with environmental multi-media issues (air, water, waste, hazardous materials, OSHA safety standards and rules. Experience in completing compliance documentation.Strong computer skills and good communicator.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Safety Professional, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator A-SO Certification, EPA Method 9 Visible Emissions Certification, Water System Operator required or must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
