Montgomery College has multiple openings for a Public Safety Dispatcher in the Department of Public Safety. The work schedules are Saturday and Sunday from 6:45am to 3:15pm and Monday through Wednesday from 2:45pm to 11:15pm with Thursday and Friday off and Monday through Thursday from 2:45pm to 11:15pm with Friday and Saturday off and 2:45pm to 11:15pm Wednesday through Sunday with Monday and Tuesday off.  Hours and days are subject to change as the operation expands services. This is a Non-Bargaining, non-exempt, grade 15 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Dispatching

  • Answers all telephone calls, including multiple calls concurrently
  • Assigns officers to calls for assistance
  • Creates dispatch log entries for all officer duties
  • Researches information for officers and callers
  • Verifies complete and accurate information being received and entered into software
  • Monitors police/fire/ems/ emergency and weather incidents

Oversee campus-wide security and fire system

  • Oversee campus-wide security and fire system
  • Monitors simplex fire alarm screen
  • Monitors CCTV equipment
  • Remotely access buildings/classrooms following a predetermined schedule or as needed

Serve as initial contact for callers (call-taking)

  • Responds to incoming calls for assistance
  • Calms angered, distraught or frightened callers
  • Assists callers with information
  • Serves as a designated - CSA Campus Security Authority

Liaison between department and outside agencies

  • Acts as key contact between officers and external agencies during emergency situations
  • Requests outside agency assistance as directed by patrol officers
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the campus geography and surrounding area to direct emergency personnel when needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship
  • High school diploma or GED - Higher education in a related field desired
  • At least one-year work experience in customer service, call center, dispatch center, office environment or related experience.
  • Ability to handle stressful information, situations and information exchanges in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, gather and disseminate information.
  • Detail-oriented, accurate, precise communication.
  • Ability to operate computers, phones and work with Microsoft Office and other software databases.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Commitment to working within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other Public Safety staff, College employees and local law enforcement officials.
  • The ability to work shift work, holidays, and work mandated overtime when required. Shifts include days, evenings and Saturdays.
  • Ability to work on an on-call basis to cover mandatory minimum staffing needs as they arise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college experience or Associate's Degree.
  • Prior experience with radio and dispatch systems including computer aided dispatch software.
  • Prior dispatch experience.
  • Prior public safety/security experience.
  • Training in public safety/security/law enforcement experience.
