Position Summary

Victoria College's Division of Student Services is recruiting for an Academic Advisor-Counselor to work in the Advising, Counseling, & Support Services Department.  This position is responsible for participating in the planning and delivery of academic advising and support services that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for all students. Advises and counsels students in the areas of academic planning, degree requirements, and career exploration. Responsible for understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic options available to students. Develops and maintains working relationships with other areas of the college.  Serves as a resource for staff and faculty, collaborates to identify appropriate services for students.  Works closely with all Academic Advisors to develop and implement programs and activities that encourage student learning and development.  Assists the Counseling Center in providing initial analysis, short-term personal counseling, and crisis intervention.  Assists with establishing, fostering and maintaining relationships with community based mental health and counseling resources in efforts of developing comprehensive referral services for social support services.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates as a team member with recruiters, advisors, other Student Services staff and faculty in developing, coordinating and implementing programs to increase recruitment and retention efforts and develop strategies for all students.
  2. Maintains and ensures confidentiality of student documents and records in accordance with Victoria College and FERPA policies.
  3. Provides academic advisement and career planning services to students to assist in identifying educational goals and developing Plans of Completion highlighting appropriate pathways to meet their goals and conducting follow-up meeting with students to monitor progress.
  4. Provides academic and career advising for new and continuing students, including those in workforce training programs, transfer and technical degree and certificate programs.
  5. Assists students with the admissions process, to include completion of applications (admissions, financial aid, scholarship, etc.), and assessment requirements.
  6. Assists with classroom presentations, Pirate Orientations, workshops, campus tours, and other college related events.
  7. Participates on committees, attends professional development opportunities in regards to academic advising & specialist subjects and disseminate relevant information.
  8. Evaluates students’ challenges that may impact their ability to achieve academic success and provides interventions that include connecting them to campus and/or community resources.
  9. Assist students in selecting appropriate coursework based on their assessment scores, skill levels and educational/career goals.
  10. Develops, implements, and/or coordinates programs and activities in regards to counseling support services (i.e. stress management, conflict management, sexual assault & domestic violence, etc.).
  11. Assists in the coordination of student support services provided to students with disabilities and veterans.
  12. Assists students experiencing crisis situations on campus and make appropriate referrals.  
  13. Contributes to an environment that is inviting and positive to enhance the delivery of student support services.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Advising and Counseling Services.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or equivalent licensing credentials required. 
  • Experience in providing personal counseling, to include crisis intervention preferred.
  • Must support and have a clear understanding of the mission of community college.
  • Experience working in an educational environment and working with a diverse population including veterans and students with disabilities, is preferred.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. 
  • Experience with software, including MS Office, Internet, Banner, and email. 
  • Ability to accomplish business tasks, meet deadlines, and ability to learn and interpret policies and procedures.
