Thermal and Structural Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you searching for impactful thermal and structural work, especially in the area of hypersonics?

Are you passionate about analysis and design and furthering the state of the art in vehicle technologies?

Do you enjoy working with a team of forward-thinking engineers who want to solve some of the nation’s most challenging thermal design problems?

If so, we 're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a Mechanical or Aerospace Engineer to analyze new and existing high speed vehicle designs. As a member of our team, you will contribute to exciting projects supporting the U.S. Department of Defense and the warfighter. Our team strives to develop, apply, and maintain deep expertise in thermal and structural design and analysis. You will work alongside hypersonics experts who have a real passion for conducting state-of-the-art research to advance our country 's capabilities.

As a Thermal and Structural Engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be modeling and analyzing the thermal and structural characteristics of various air-vehicle configurations including hypersonic re-entry vehicles, supersonic missiles and rockets, and high speed air-breathing concepts.
  • You will primarily use a mix of in-house tools, commercial FEA software, and first order approximations to conduct analysis.
  • You will define structural, systems and thermal protection system requirements for various portions of flight and perform analysis to predict performance and survivability of various hypersonic vehicle systems.
  • You will plan, conduct, or direct high temperature thermal testing, such as wind tunnel, arc jet or similar tests.
  • You will perform post-test analysis to render data into high fidelity models. You will support associated test activities including pre-test predictions, test design, instrumentation requirements, and documentation.
  • You will lead and contribute to planning activities for future projects and initiatives while providing technical guidance for ongoing projects.
  • You will craft reports and presentations to communicate results to team members and government partners.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or another related technical discipline.
  • Have at least three years of relevant experience in conducting finite element analysis (FEA) and/or thermal analysis.

You 'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or a related field.
  • Have performed design, analysis, or testing of hypersonic weapon systems with a focus on thermal or structural analysis.
  • Have experience with high temperature hypersonic material development, testing and/or integration.
  • Have demonstrated initiative, motivation, and flexibility.
