Job Summary

Community Roots Housing is looking for a Grants and Philanthropy Manager to manage and execute a strategic fundraising approach to secure both individual donations and institutional awards for the Community Roots Housing Foundation. They will support the Foundation in its long-term goal to transform our fundraising efforts to a community centric model, prioritizing racial equity and social justice in all that we do.

Individual giving: The Grants and Philanthropy Manager will support the organization's overall individual giving priorities and strategy, both for the annual fund and for the Rise Together capital campaign. This position collaborates with the Senior Manager of Philanthropy to manage annual individual giving prospecting, solicitation, stewardship, and acknowledgement. Along with the Senior Manager of Philanthropy, the Grants and Philanthropy Manager will staff the Foundation Board Individual Giving Committee.

Institutional giving: With support and oversight from the Senior Manager of Philanthropy, the Grants and Philanthropy Manager will be responsible for developing a strategy for annual grants acquisition and stewardship, and will support grant strategy and applications for the Rise Together capital campaign as needed. This position will be responsible for research and prospecting, annual strategic grant planning and projections, grant writing and proposal coordination, funder communications, grant tracking in Salesforce (CRM), grant reporting, and funder acknowledgement. This position works directly with CRH program staff to develop strategies for funding programs and related projects. In addition, they work closely with the Foundation Executive Director and partner organization staff on capital grant proposals as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop annual grants strategy and calendar with oversight and support from the Senior Manager of Philanthropy.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager of Philanthropy, identify, build relationships with, communicate with, and manage stewardship of individual and institutional donors.
  • Coordinate clear internal communication around grant opportunities, reporting and deadlines.
  • Prepare and submit timely, high quality grant proposals and award submissions, funder acknowledgements, and reports, ensuring input and approval by the Senior Manager of Philanthropy and other appropriate staff.
  • Perform prospect research on foundations, corporations, and government sources through the Foundation Directory Online database and other resources to identify new grant opportunities throughout the year, including capital grant opportunities, and present findings to the Senior Manager of Philanthropy.
  • Manage meticulous recording and tracking of grant and individual giving opportunities in Salesforce (CRM) through all stages, with detailed deliverables for each opportunity.
  • Support the Senior Manager of Philanthropy in managing the Individual Giving board committee's engagement in individual fundraising goals and strategy.
  • Prepare regular internal reports on grant and individual giving activity for review by staff and board.
  • Support the Senior Manager of Philanthropy with planning and implementation of individual giving campaigns, such as Giving Tuesday and End of Year giving.
  • Track annual fundraising results around institutional and individual giving through review and analysis of annual budget to actuals.
  • Attend quarterly Foundation Board Meetings and prepare materials for presentation, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice, as well as awareness of the impacts of institutional racism on housing and economic opportunity.
  • Minimum four years of a combination of grant writing and/or fund development experience.
  • Excellence in writing and compelling storytelling; gift for translating program facts and data into a cohesive narrative with a heartbeat.
  • Demonstrated track record of crafting winning public and private funding proposals for nonprofits.
  • Experience framing structure, tone and content of grant proposals in response to differing institutional conventions and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with prospective and current donors.
  • Experience developing grant proposal budgets in collaboration with program staff.
  • The ability to operate efficiently and gracefully under pressure of deadlines.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with prospect research techniques and resources.
  • Project management skills; highly organized.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including public speaking and one-on-one meetings.
  • Demonstrated skill in goal setting, planning, coordinating, and organizing/motivating groups of people toward goals.
  • Proficiency in general office software, such as MS Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in and with communities of color, which are disproportionately represented among our low-income housing residents.
  • 3+ years of grants management experience (full spectrum of prospect research, grant tracking, reporting, funder acknowledgment and stewardship).
  • 2+ years of individual giving management experience (individual donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship)
  • Bachelor's degree OR demonstrated equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in the affordable housing industry.
  • Experience writing complex government grants.
  • Knowledge of local, state and national funding sources.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce.
