Architectural studies at the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Johannesburg are offered through the Department of Architecture (DoA) and of the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA).The GSA is the largest graduate school of architecture in Africa and has established itself as a progressive and innovative nexus of architectural training, education and research. The School employs the Unit system for the teaching of its professional Master’s programme and is currently actively developing post-professional Advanced Design Research Master’s offerings (MArch Design, Theory and Practice) together with both traditional and practice-based PhDs and a Post Graduate Diploma in Architectural Management. The GSA is seeking to make a new appointment at the Lecturer level to commence in January/February 2023.

Job Description:

We are looking for an exceptionally motivated, qualified and energetic applicant to fulfil the role of Programme Leader in Making and Practice, responsible for shaping, managing and delivering world-class programmes in the area of Architectural Making and Practice. The successful applicant will be responsible for coordinating learning and research in Professional Practice, broader Creative Practice and in Making (Design Realisation) within the GSA’s primary programme leading to the professional M Arch, the Post Graduate Diploma in Architectural Management and supporting the developing Advanced Design Research initiatives, working closely in supporting Unit staff with studies in Making in the context of the professional MArch programme, and collaborating with other Programme Leaders to develop innovative approaches to architectural education, research and practice. The successful applicant must have demonstrated and extensive experience in Professional Architectural practice, knowledge of other forms of creative and intellectual practice and research and significant experience in the conceptualisation, design, design development and implementation of architectural projects. Awareness, experience of and familiarity with both conventional and alternative systems of professional practice. Knowledge of architectural theory and historiography, including familiarity with major contemporary research paradigms including aspects of cultural theory – with specific reference to those directly related to practice and making . We are particularly interested in candidates with specific knowledge or research interest in African, diasporic and post-colonial architectural and broader creative culture, history and theory. You will have experience in teaching and education, - ideally within the Unit System - and research, as well as administrative, managerial and leadership skills.

The applicant will be able to share their vision for contributing to a programme that brings together the different strengths already present in the School, whilst developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant. In addition, the successful applicant will be able to meaningfully contribute to the GSA commitment to both ‘transformative pedagogy’ and ‘transformative practice’ on-going design and research initiatives aimed at finding innovative and intellectually rigorous approaches to the transformation of architectural pedagogy and practice in a developing world context. The applicant will share the responsibility of developing a robust and challenging culture as we seek to build a new generation of African architects and scholars. The pursuit of publication, travel and exhibition opportunities is highly encouraged and actively supported.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach and assess Making and Practice at the Master’s level and other GSA Programmes;
  • Lead and teach a GSA Unit
  • Contribute actively to research in their specialist field related to Practice and Making
  • Contribute to and support the GSA’s Architectural Design Units and Advanced Design Research Units
  • Contribute to teaching at undergraduate level at the DoA
  • Publish research, including the work of your students, using appropriate channels (peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations) as well as exhibitions, new forms of media and speaking engagements;
  • Share in the administration and management of the GSA and the wider Faculty;
  • Participate in official meetings of the GSA and Faculty;
  • Cultivate an active presence as a public intellectual;
  • Develop key national and international links and collaborative opportunities;
  • Actively contribute to the development and growth of the GSA.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Architecture or related discipline
  • Extensive Experience in Practice and Making
  • An in-depth and current knowledge of architectural practice and design with a particular emphasis on making and fabrication;
  • Familiarity and experience with Unit System teaching
  • Professional qualification in and/or experience in the practice of architecture;
  • A demonstrable research interest and proven research ability (articles, exhibitions, books);
  • A record of collegiality, collaboration and initiative;
  • Experience of teaching/reviewing at tertiary level;

  • A specialist knowledge of architecture and design;
  • Proven planning and administrative skills;
  • Ability to monitor and coach student performance and provide critical feedback in an objective and professional manner;
  • Ability to facilitate the teaching of design and theory over a broad spectrum of theories and methodologies;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with people from a wide range of disciplines and to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
