POSITION: Retention Specialist
STATUS: Full-Time
 
This position is responsible for supporting all outreach efforts for students having academic difficulties, including assigning appropriate interventions for early alerts, mid- term deficiencies, re-admitted students, and students who are in danger of losing financial aid due to PACE. Work is done under the supervision of the Executive Director with direct report to the Coordinator of Retention.
 
Specific Duties
  • Acts as liaison to at-risk students whether self-identified or faculty/staff identified.
  • Responsible for conducting outreach by phone to new students and referring students to additional services or departments when necessary.
  • Responsible for conducting outreach by phone, email, or mail to students who receive early alerts if mid-term deficiencies for further information, setting advising appointments, and referring to services.
  • Responsible for communicating with students via phone, email, mail, or in person who are non- compliant with their referred intervention and documenting that interaction for the Retention Coordinator.
  • Identifies gaps in services based on best practices in retention and creates programming to improve student success.
  • Responsible for supporting activities related to retaining special populations, including outreach.
  • Responsible for assisting in the Retention Lab with duties such as web management, requisitions, correspondence, and office supplies when necessary.
  • Participation in the orientation of new students.
  • Conducts on-going evaluation of services rendered and present in reports as required.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development workshops, and attending training and/or courses as deemed necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
  • Must have a working knowledge of general university regulations.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the requirements and expectations of all undergraduate degree programs at the University.
  • Must have a working knowledge of academic status policy of the university, and all procedures related to its proper execution, such as withdrawals, transient, grade appeals and changes, and attendance.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Jenzabar, Banner or Datatel.
  • Must have a working knowledge of degree tracking programs.
  • Must have a working knowledge of student progress or advising programs.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office systems.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively one-on-one and in small and large groups.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively in writing.
  • Must have the ability to work with diverse perspectives.
  • Must have the ability to work within university guidelines to plan small or large events,
  • Must have the ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Must have the ability to collect and report on data.
 
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required from an accredited institution in psychology, education, student personnel, or closely related field;
  • Master’s preferred
 
Experience
  • Three or more years of experience with federal TRIO programs, academic support programs, tutor coordination, retention services, advising or similar programs serving students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
  • Three years or more of experience advising/counseling/coaching in academic planning and student success in higher education
  • Experience in case management, such as documenting and tracking services in a database and/or participant file.
