Job Description
A post-doctoral researcher position is available for a project on management of flatheaded borers in woody ornamental nursery production systems. The successful candidate will take a lead on improving trapping methods, including identification of borer volatile and visual cues, and optimizing chemical and cultural management practices. The candidate will be conducting both laboratory and field research in Tennessee nurseries as well as participating in extension activities. This is a grant funded position with a 2-year duration.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Be involved in interdisciplinary cooperative work with entomologists, horticulturalists, plant pathologists, extension agents/specialists and other disciplines at TSU and grant partnering universities and USDA agencies to achieve project goals.
Have extensive knowledge of insect behavior and management in agriculture systems.
Identify Buprestid borers in the genus Chrysobothris to species using morphological keys.
Conduct behavioral bioassays with visual and olfactory stimuli.
Develop and test trap modifications using results from behavioral bioassays.
Conduct chemical and biological insecticide trials for flatheaded borer management.
Evaluate cultural management practices for preventing flatheaded borers.
Evaluate borer damage on trees under different production conditions.
Preparation of manuscripts to be submitted for peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Participation in meetings, seminars, talks, lectures, preparation of research results for publication in reports.
Supervise graduate students, interns and hourly employees in the laboratory or field setting.
Assist with grant management.
Minimum Qualifications/Experience
Ph.D. in Entomology, Horticulture, Biology or related field
Applicants should have a strong interest in ecology, behavior and management of flatheaded borers in agriculture systems. Experience with insect identification, insect behavioral bioassays and field agriculture experiments are essential. Other experience working with flatheaded borers or similar wood borers desirable. The candidate must have published in peer-reviewed journals.
Be able to operate a vehicle to collect samples from field.
Be able to operate farm equipment (tractors, planters, bush hog mowers, etc.) or willing to learn. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
