Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong independent research group in Bioanalytical Chemistry, including supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, be able to develop collaborations with researchers in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, other departments at GMU, research centers, and neighboring federal laboratories. Candidates with research programs that can collaborate with current faculty in the areas that include chemical biology, biotechnology, bio-environmental chemistry, proteomics/metabolomics, nanomaterials, and/or sustainable energy are of high interest. The successful candidate will show promise for scientific impact through research, scholarship, service, and teaching. Primary teaching duties will include undergraduate and graduate level courses in at least one of the following: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and/or specialized topics within the successful candidate’s research portfolio. All areas of specialization in experimental bioanalytical chemistry will be considered. The successful candidate will also perform standard departmental service activities, mentor students, and will be expected to establish collaborative relationships with Departmental faculty as well as with other groups within the University. About the Department: The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has research labs and faculty distributed over three campuses addressing three primary research thrust areas: Fairfax campus (materials, energy and sustainability), the Science and Technology campus in Manassas (biomedical – biochemistry and synthetic organic chemistry), and the Potomac Environmental Research & Education Center (environmental chemistry). The research funding portfolio includes the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), other government and non-profit agencies, and private industry. Faculty in the department have close collaborations with researchers from a number of local and regional institutions, including the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), NIH, Food and Drug Administration, Naval Research Laboratory, National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and Inova Health System among others.
