The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) Adult Clinic at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. The patient population is primarily adults aged 18 and above with Type 1 Diabetes, but also includes occasional patients with Type 2 Diabetes. In addition to the clinical program, the BDC has a large research program allowing many ongoing educational opportunities. This Instructor position is an at-will faculty appointment. This position will provide diabetes care to newly diagnosed and established adults who have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. This appointment will also require involvement in multiple research studies.

Postdoctoral Fellows are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

Nature of Work

This position will perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards including human blood and blood products. Intermediate Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related area
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required
  • Animal husbandry
  • Perform experiments using animals (rodents)

  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions
  • Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members

Conditions of Employment:

Must be willing and able to work with cells, tissues and laboratory animals.

A person in this position may be expected to work during weekends instead of weekdays (e.g. Sunday through Thursday etc). Also, studies use tissues isolated from organ donors. When receiving such tissue samples, candidates may be occasionally requested to work after hours without a prior notification. 

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) research assistant position at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.  The successful candidate will work in the Research Division of the Center in the laboratory of Dr. Maki Nakayama on projects exploring the mechanism of developing type 1 diabetes and related autoimmune diseases in the mouse model and in patients having type 1 diabetes.  The laboratory especially focuses on antigen-specific T cells triggering type 1 diabetesWhile the majority of duties will be performed during the regular work hours, occasional experiments will need to be performed after hours and in weekends.  The position is not eligible for tenure.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $54,840-$55,632

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • PhD in molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory
  • Prior experience with processing and/or analyzing blood
