Additional Position Information:

This postdoctoral fellowship provides an opportunity to co-produce actionable science that addresses the growing needs of the Alaska wildland fire management community. You will have the opportunity to practice data science and use models for active fire characterization. Observational data from the Alaska EPSCoR Boreal Fire component will also be utilized to interpret and validate models of active fire behavior. Case studies will be prioritized for the 2021 Munson Creek and Dry Creek Fires, for which significant observational data has been collected. This position is affiliated with the GI's Atmospheric Science Group .

Additional Department Information:

EPSCoR is a $20 million, 5-year National Science Foundation cooperative agreement that supports interdisciplinary research to build capacity in the State of Alaska. The project is titled “Fire and Ice: Navigating Variability in Boreal Wildfire Regimes and Subarctic Coastal Ecosystems” and includes a significant research effort to develop seasonal outlooks based on weather/climate and wildland fuel conditions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of data science, including geospatial data analysis and modeling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of configuring, running, and interpreting fire behavior models.
  • Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and other scholarly publications.
  • Ability to work from a command line.
  • Ability to conduct statistical analysis of model output.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.

Required Experience, Education or Training:

Ph.D. degree (already received, or has completed all requirements and awaiting graduation) in atmospheric sciences, data science, physics, fire sciences, or a related discipline. Must possess terminal degree prior to the start of position. Experience in and ability to work with large meteorological and remote sensing data sets in various formats (e.g., NetCDF and grib).

Preferred:
Strong background in wildfire or ecological science as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.


Salary Information:

This position is a full-time, Post Doctoral, term-funded, exempt, 9-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires starting salary will be based on education and experience.


Special Instructions to Applicants:

This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
