Position Summary
The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is a basic science department in the School of Medicine and engages in a broad range of teaching and research activities. Faculty in the Department conduct research on a variety of problems ranging from the study of nervous system function to the control of blood pressure. It is also strong in renal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurophysiology. Faculty in this department also interacts with clinical departments within the School of Medicine. The department’s breadth of research interests allows us to offer students a unique exposure to physiology at the molecular, cellular and organ levels. Active interaction occurs with other basic science departments at the University as well as collaboration with scientists at nearby Duke University and Research Triangle Park. 
 
The goal of our research is to develop treatments for chronic pain and autism spectrum disorders. The primary purpose of this Temporary Research Technician position is to perform standardized molecular biology, cell culture and behavioral experiments, mouse colony management and husbandry, and be responsible for general maintenance of lab equipment and lab management (ordering supplies, tracking invoices, managing solutions.) 
 
The employee will work under the supervision of the P.I. and/or senior postdoctoral research staff to complete the following experimental procedures: 
1) Molecular biology work, including preparation for and/or assistance with PCR genotyping, western blotting, DNA cloning 
2) Preparation of solutions and standard media 
3) Assist PI/other lab members with anesthetizing mice and dissection of tissues, including brain and dorsal root ganglia 
4) Assist other lab members with behavioral experiments with mice 
5) Assist with intrathecal, intravenous, and oral gavage to administer drugs 
6) Mouse colony management and husbandry 
7) Generating cortical neuron cultures using established procedures 
8) Culture of cell lines 
9) Transfection of DNA into cell lines and neurons 
10) Use computer for email, word processing and data presentation 
11) Maintain and record results in a lab notebook 
 
This position will report results directly to the P.I. and/or senior postdocs on a daily basis.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This individual must have the ability to solve routine problems and make routine decisions, but must consult with the PI or supervisor for guidance.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The preferred candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree and training/experience in neuroscience, biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have previous experience with PCR genotyping, western blotting, and DNA cloning.
The selected candidate must have previous molecular biology lab experience, previous experience working with or a willingness to learn mouse colony management and husbandry, knowledge of cell culture techniques, and basic computer skills for email, word processing, and data presentation. Ability to maintain lab equipment and manage lab in day-to-day functions such as ordering supplies, tracking invoices, and managing solutions is a must.
