Overview

This role will report to the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Senior Director will work closely with the COO and other members of the executive leadership team to coordinate and execute strategic initiatives and the day-to-day operations of the Institute. This resource will serve in a leadership role to support the COO, in collaboration with the executive leadership team, to align the Institute’s strategic and operational goals and initiatives and to manage relationships with partners organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the senior strategic adviser to the COO, providing counsel and operational coordination to the COO team and other senior leaders. Participates in creating the strategic direction and operational imperatives for the office of the COO and the Institute.
  • Acts as a key thought partner to the COO in the planning and continued improvement of Dana-Farber operations. Actively participates in strategic decision-making, risk assessment, challenging assumptions, communications, and budget creation.
  • Functions as the primary resource for the COO in facilitating organizational, administration and portfolio management activities. Responsibilities include:
    • Provide advisory and analytic support to the COO as needed
    • Oversees large, often cross-functional organization-wide projects or initiatives as needed, including project design and implementation
    • Coordination of key leadership meetings, including identification of key issues for discussion, inclusion of necessary stakeholders and decision-makers. Will have primary responsibility to follow up on execution of action items
    • Develops content and/or organizes and gathers information from various departments and other resources; reports that information, along with recommendations, to executive members as needed
    • Creates systems and processes to streamline operations.
  • Assists in overall management of the office of the COO. Helps to develop and oversee COO budget.
  • Serves as a liaison to partner institutions (Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School) and staffs the DF-BWH Executive Operations Committee.
  • Assists with strategic communications, including presentations to key stakeholders within and outside the organization.
  • Serves on various Institute-level committees, representing the office of the COO.
  • Resolves, or triages as necessary, issues as escalated by team members and/or other DFCI departments.
  • Key collaborator in helping other Operations senior leaders meet and exceed goals and objectives.
  • Performs varying duties depending on the shifting needs of the office of the COO and its staff members.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required and preferred in Business/Healthcare related field; Master’s Degree in Public Health, Business Administration, or Health Administration preferred. A working knowledge of healthcare and academic medicine is essential.

Minimum of ten years of experience, preferably in a highly complex, matrixed organization such as an academic medical center, medical school teaching hospital, research university, biopharma or other/consulting experiences in such environments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong strategic thinking aptitude, management experience and an analytic orientation.
  • Success in working across a complex organization's constituencies, bringing together personalities and priorities, and working through differences.
  • Ability to interpret, understand, and carry out COO’s vision and strategic intent
  • Ability to lead the coordination and strategic alignment of diverse business activities – both internal and externally.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and business impacts. Established skills in planning and managing multiple, diverse projects or initiatives.
  • Ability to interact and influence organization-wide (and beyond) and to work collaboratively across functions, levels, and departments toward shared objectives.
  • Highly motivated and able to work both with a high degree of autonomy and as a member of the leadership team.
  • Experience in building positive relationships and influencing executive audiences.
  • Ability to seamlessly operate at a tactical, strategic, and operational level.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including preparing presentations, graphics, and design, and writing with clarity.
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, persistence, and discretion.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the team and the organization.
  • High level of comfort with ambiguous situations; ability to maintain flexibility and adaptability while maintaining focus on goals and important deadlines.
  • Ability to use a variety of resources to investigate and effectively analyze a diverse array of health-related topics.
