The Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Pittsburgh seeks applicants for a faculty position with primary responsibility for the educational mission of the department and the school. The candidates may also have an interest in methodological and collaborative research. The position may be at the assistant or associate professor level (appointment stream), to begin in fall 2023 or earlier. We seek outstanding individuals with a strong commitment to education. Responsibilities for this position will include teaching both graduate-level courses and undergraduate courses, providing leadership within the department and school on the biostatistics curriculum, participating at the national level in biostatistics education forums, and working on collaborative projects in the public health/biomedical field. We seek applicants with a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, data science, biomedical science, or other related quantitative disciplines. New PhDs and postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply. For appointment as an assistant professor, candidates must show evidence of teaching either undergraduate courses or graduate-level courses. For appointment as associate professor, candidates should have extensive teaching experience including new course design and teaching of large enrollment courses. While the current position emphasizes education, we provide flexibility and opportunity for career growth. If desired, the position can be structured to include a collaborative, consultative, or investigator-driven research component.

 

Founded in 1949 as one of the original departments of the School of Public Health, the Department of Biostatistics currently consists of 21 primary and 23 secondary faculty members. Our faculty have methodological expertise in many traditional and cutting-edge areas, including bioinformatics, clinical trials, environmental statistics, missing data, meta-analysis, longitudinal data, ROC analysis, statistical genomics, statistical machine learning, stochastic processes and survival analysis. The department has strong collaborative relationships with many academic and clinical units in the School of Public Health and the School of Medicine. Home to prominent research centers such as NRG Oncology Statistics and Data Management Center, and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Biostatistics Core, the Department of Biostatistics has major research efforts in chronic diseases including cancer, mental health, liver diseases, large-scale clinical trials, and the study of health problems specific to urban and industrial environments. Beyond the university, the department also collaborates with UPMC—Pennsylvania’s largest academic medical center, private sectors, and local and state government agencies. The department is also committed to training the next generation of biostatisticians and health data scientists. The department has thriving MS and Ph.D. programs consisting currently of approximately 40 fully funded Ph.D. students and 30 MS students. Our alumni hold faculty positions at major academic institutions, government agencies, and leading industries. The SPH recently launched a new Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), a four-year program designed to expose students to concepts and experiences necessary for success in the workplace and to further education and lifelong learning in the field of public health. This position will play a key role in teaching and curriculum development for the BSPH program.
