Description

The Radiation Biophysics Lab at NASA Ames combines computational and experimental biology techniques to investigate the outcomes of deep space radiation with a focus on DNA damage, cancer, the immune system and the central nervous system.

This project is focused on understanding the genomic and phenotypic associations with human immune sensitivity to simulated deep space radiation and investigating the secreted biomarkers of individual radiation responses. We have collected a large set of primary immune cells from healthy donors, exposed the cells to simulated deep space radiation, and are in the process of quantifying the outcomes, with a focus on DNA damage. In addition, we have performed low-throughput whole genome sequencing to identify genomic associations with radiation responses and are planning to examine ionizing radiation-induced changes in gene expression. Finally, we are interested in secreted biomarkers of individual responses to ionizing radiation, with a special focus on exosomes, cytokines and gene expression.

The postdoctoral scholar will work on investigating the variability of human immune responses to ionizing radiation, the genomic associations with ionizing radiation susceptibility, and exosome characteristics and functions in response to ionizing radiation. There may be an opportunity to participate in developing new technology for rapid   in-flight quantification of multiple blood-based variables, including DNA damage in immune cells, exosomes and other outcomes.

Computational genomics and transcriptomics analysis, computational modeling of biological systems, experimental analysis of exosomes, cell culture techniques, experience with microfluidics.
