Berry College, as part of an international team of collaborators, is looking for a post-doctoral scholar to work with a diverse team of scholars on race and gender inequalities in science in distinct non-US country contexts: Brazil and South Africa. The ideal candidate will have a background in bibliometrics, computational social science, and information science, or an interest in working in those fields. We invite candidates who share these interests to apply and join our team in developing empirical insights on the impact of diversity in science.

About the Project:

Following the previous work of the team (https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2113067119), this research aims to investigate the direct harms to science wrought by structural racism and sexism from an intersectional perspective, using quantitative tools from statistics and data mining, natural language processing and social network analysis, and large scale bibliometric databases such as Web of Science and Dimensions. Specifically, this work seeks to (a) quantify the participation of people of color and members of historically marginalized populations in the production of science, with a focus on the Brazilian and South African country context, (b) elucidate their role in propelling intellectual innovations, and (c) the role of institutions in the reproduction of systemic inequalities.

Candidate Background:

The candidate should be familiar with the key concepts of critical race theory, systemic inequalities, and intersectionality. Expertise and experience with the history of racial or gender inequalities in South Africa and/or Brazil is a plus. The new hire will work on large-scale bibliometric databases, using tools from statistical analysis, but also new computational methods. Experience in bibliometric analysis or computational social science is preferred, however, applicants interested in learning how to implement computational models in social science are welcome to apply.

Mentoring Support:

Along with supporting the principal investigators, Dr. Thema Monroe-White (Berry College) and Dr. Cassidy Sugimoto (Georgia Tech), this position will also include a mentoring component tailored to expanding the scholar's knowledge and preparing them for future opportunities. This plan will include but is not limited to: career counseling, preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations of information, teaching and mentoring tasks, and travel to academic conferences to learn and network with other prominent professionals. Meetings with PIs will occur regularly, keeping a supervised yet flexible program design.

Opportunity: A one-year, full-time salaried position, renewable for a second year.

Diego Kozlowski

Diego Kozlowski is a PhD candidate at the Doctoral Training Unit in Data-Driven Computational Modelling (DTU-DRIVEN) at the University of Luxembourg. His work focuses on implementing computational methods to answer questions in social science, particularly on the field of Science of Science. He holds a licenciate degree in Economics from the University of Buenos Aires, and a Specialization and Master degree in Data Mining & Knowledge discovery from the University of Buenos Aires.

Dr. Vincent Larivière

Vincent Larivière holds the Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication at the Université de Montréal, where he is professor of information science and associate vice-president (planning and communications). He is also scientific director of the érudit journal platform, associate scientific director of the Observatoire des sciences et des technologies (OST) and regular member of the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST). He holds a B.A. in Science, Technology and Society (UQAM), an M.A. in history of science (UQAM) and a Ph.D. in information science (McGill), and has performed postdoctoral work at Indiana University's Department of Information and Library Science.

Dr. Thema Monroe-White

Dr. Thema Monroe-White is an Assistant Professor of Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Data Analytics at Berry College. Her research is concerned with broadening participation in STEM fields, with a special emphasis on information sciences, systems, and technology. She is particularly interested in understanding the innovative pathways that lead to the economic and social empowerment of underrepresented people of color. She holds a bachelor's in Psychology and master's in Neuropsychology from Howard University and a Ph.D. in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Cassidy R. Sugimoto

Dr. Cassidy R. Sugimoto is Professor and Tom and Marie Patton School Chair in the School of Public Policy at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research examines the formal and informal ways in which knowledge is produced, disseminated, consumed, and supported, with an emphasis on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Sugimoto was a professor of Informatics in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington from 2010-2021 and served as the Program Director for the Science of Science and Innovation Policy program at the National Science Foundation from 2018-2020. She has received the Indiana University Trustees Teaching award (2014), a national service award from the Association for Information Science and Technology (2009), and a Bicentennial Award for service from Indiana University (2020). She holds a bachelor's in Music Performance, a master's in Library Science, and a doctoral degree in Information and Library Science all from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
