The School of Medicine’s Division of Rheumatology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Senior Laboratory Science Professional.
Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.
Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed fully independently.
Nature of Work
Senior Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Senior Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.
Some Assignments will not move beyond this level.
This senior laboratory science professional will join the research team led by Dr. Kristi Kuhn, Associate Professor in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus. This full-time position, supervised by Dr. Kuhn, will be split with ~60% of time spent on activities in Dr. Kuhn’s lab, 20% Laboratory management for the overall Division of Rheumatology, and ~20% of time in the Gnotobiotic Mouse Core Facility under the supervision of Ms. Cassandra Levens. The lab and core facility work together as a team comprising other research professionals, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
Dr. Kuhn’s laboratory studies how intestinal bacteria and their metabolites affect adaptive immune development in the setting of systemic inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, spondyloarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Examples of Duties Performed
Dr. Kuhn’s Laboratory
- Kuhn Laboratory inventory, ordering, purchase reconciliation
- Mouse colony maintenance (breeding, weaning, recordkeeping)
- Assistance in key laboratory projects (mouse colonoscopy and models of arthritis; tissue harvest for histology, cellular, and molecular analyses such as pathology, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, ELISAs, and qPCR; T cell stimulation assays for cytokine secretion)
Division Laboratory Management
- Organization and management of laboratory related Environmental Health Safety paperwork, IACUC protocols and annual reviews, Paperwork for DEA regulated substances, etc.
- Development and maintenance of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Coordinating and managing division shared equipment maintenance (calibration, servicing, defrosting, etc.)
- Asset management (asset tagging, periodic asset inventory, green-tagging and disposal, coordinating movement of items)
- Assist with organizing divisional wide laboratory meetings
Gnotobiotic Mouse Core Facility
- Mouse husbandry within sterile isolators (cage changing, breeding, weaning, etc.)
- Sterilizing bedding, food, and water
- Quality assurance testing
- Experimental manipulations and sample collection (oral gavage, blood and fecal collections, etc.)
- Detailed record keeping of activities within the core

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, immunology, microbiology or related field
- A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
- Two (2) years professional level research experience
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) years professional level research experience OR Master’s degree in biology, immunology, microbiology, or related scientific field and three (3) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory
- Experience with bacterial cloning using CRISPR/Cas and protein expression
- Computational experience with microbiome sequencing analysis, RNA sequencing analysis, or similar
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with inventory management
- Proficiency with mouse breeding, colony maintenance, and experimental manipulation
- Expertise in general laboratory procedures including cell culture, RNA extraction, qPCR, ELISAs, histology and flow cytometry
- Advanced knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
- Demonstrated communication skills as well as ability to prioritize duties and coordinate with multiple individuals
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
- Flexible, collegial, and collaborative disposition
- Outstanding customer service skills
- Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
- Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
Salary and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $47,388-60,278.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
