The Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry and National Center for Forensic Science (NCFS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) are seeking applicants for a 9-month, tenure-earning assistant professor position specializing in forensic biochemistry, to begin in the spring of 2023. This position will be jointly hired by the Department of Chemistry and NCFS, with Chemistry as the tenure home department.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in the undergraduate and graduate Forensic Science curriculum and will be expected to develop an externally funded, nationally competitive forensic science research program with specialization in biological evidence. Research areas of interest may include DNA source attribution, application of advanced DNA/RNA methods to aid sexual assault investigations, DNA mixture deconvolution, single cell forensic genomics, phenotypic prediction, and investigative genetic genealogy. Applicants should have a strong publication record. Previous funding, coupled with a knowledge of multiple private and federal funding agencies, will be reviewed favorably. The selected candidate can expect a competitive startup package.  

The UCF Chemistry Department has broad research strengths in materials, environmental, biochemistry, forensic science, and chemical education. Faculty work collaboratively within the department and across disciplines including optics, engineering, biomedical sciences, and education. The Chemistry Department offers ACS-approved B.S. degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Chemistry, and Forensic Biochemistry, as well as a B.A. degree in Chemistry, M.S. degrees in Chemistry and Forensic Science, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry with a Forensic Science emphasis. Our Forensic B.S. programs are also FEPAC-accredited.

The NCFS is a research center comprised of 6 faculty members holding joint appointments with academic departments. The NCFS is closely aligned with the Chemistry Department at UCF with several faculty teaching in Chemistry Department academic programs and engaged in research collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline (e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, etc.) by the start of the appointment period is required.  A working knowledge of operational forensics and existing professional contacts within the forensic industry and academia are also expected.
