Department Summary
The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 40 faculty, 175 graduate and 3,000 undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal-environment interactions. We offer Bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Masters and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. Position Summary
The postdoctoral research associate will conduct research on a project aiming to understand the production of industrially relevant fatty acids in a promising alternative crop, Physaria fendleri. The employee will work in collaboration with a team of 3-4 members. More specifically, the postdoctoral research associate will : i) combine transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses in Physaria embryos, and ii) complete 13C-metabolic flux analysis in developing Physaria embryos. In addition, the employee will assist in training students, and preparing manuscripts/presentations. This work is part of larger collaborative project funded by the US Department of Agriculture.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate in plant biology, biochemistry, biology or related field. Prior experience with at least one of the following approaches, Gas Chromatography (GC-MS or GC-FID), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), analysis of 13C-labeling, and RNA-Seq is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working with oilseed plants is highly desired. Prior experience in the field of seed metabolism is preferred. Strong scientific writing, communication, and teamwork skills are highly desired.

| Responsible for the growth of Physaria plants, including planting, watering, daily hand-pollination, tagging of new flowers, collecting Physaria embryos at different stages.

Conduct research to identify candidate genes and biomarkers associated with oil accumulation and fatty acid composition utilizing molecular biology and biochemical approaches, transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Accurate record of experimental procedures & results are to be maintained. Highest quality results are expected for publication.

Maintain ongoing references and prepare reports of new developments in scientific literature on a regular basis (discuss advances with supervisor)-especially if new developments in the field warrant change in experiment strategies.
