GSPP seeks to train students to provide culturally competent services to clients and the community. GSPP is committed to building a diverse and inclusive educational environment and encourage applications from individuals with minoritized identities.
As part of our training model, GSPP offers a broad range of confidential and evidence-based mental health care to the Denver community through multiple specialized clinics. As such, GSPP has multiple specialized clinics, including the Denver Forensic Institute for Research, Service, and Training (Denver FIRST).

Denver FIRST

Founded in 2014 to serve as a regional hub for forensic mental health education, practice, and consultation, Denver Forensic Institute of Research, Service and Training (Denver FIRST) fosters community and university partnerships through a host of service-learning opportunities for graduate students working with underserved forensic populations in the local community. Denver FIRST is integrated with the Master’s in Forensic Psychology (MAFP) Program and the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP), supported by core GSPP faculty under the leadership of Director Neil Gowensmith, PhD, and staffed by GSPP students. Primarily, Denver FIRST serves as a go-to setting for forensic evaluation, outpatient competency restoration, research, grants, and consultation in forensic mental health in the Denver metro area and beyond.

Denver FIRST Forensic Evaluations

Since 2013, Denver FIRST has offered psychological evaluation services related to legal matters. Some of the evaluations include competency to stand trial, legal sanity, mitigation, school violence risk assessment, transfer and reverse transfer to adult court, abuse and neglect/FDIA, immigration/asylum, guardianship, and animal maltreatment. Denver FIRST has maintained contracts with the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) , Office of Behavioral Health (OBH), County Department of Human Services (DHS), County Probation Offices to conduct assessments for the courts. Forensic services have also been conducted through GSPP’s forensic seminar since 1999 and include the above evaluation topics as well as child/family evaluations, adoption, civil litigation evaluations, fitness for duty evaluations, and court-mandated treatment.

Denver FIRST Outpatient Competency Restoration

Denver FIRST established an Outpatient Competency Restoration Program (OCRP) in 2016, which has been awarded funding annually for competence restoration service delivery by the State of Colorado’s Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) since 2018. The OCRP provides restoration education services to adult and juvenile defendants involved in the criminal or juvenile justice systems found incompetent to proceed.
