The College of Pharmacy continues its work to ensure a diverse pharmacy workforce through its new Pharmacy Community College Connect (PC3) program, which seeks to recruit students from 2-year institutions into the profession of pharmacy. PC3 includes a10-week on campus program for students, partnerships with 2-year institutions, and the PC3 Advisory Board.

Who We Are

Founded in 1876, the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy (COP) was the first pharmacy school at a public university, established the first clinical pharmacy residency program (1927) and, in the last year, developed the CDC standard for collaborative hypertension care. The COP is ranked 3rd nationally and located within the #1 public university, the University of Michigan (UM).

COP has had a long-standing commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) having trained people of African and Asian decent before they had full citizenship in this country and women before they had the right to vote. The College has an Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and a growing DEI Unit. Additional student programming includes our Pharmacy Scholars Program and Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.

Building on these programs, the COP has created Pharmacy Community College Connect, or PC3, that will engage students earlier in the education pathway. We are currently partnering with five community colleges and two tribal colleges, with the expectation to expand in coming years. Within Michigan, 60% of our racial or ethnic groups are underrepresented in science and many members of these groups are enrolled in community or tribal colleges. Through PC3, we endeavor to attract these students to careers in pharmacy.

PC3 students will travel to Ann Arbor for a 10-week summer program that will feature individual academic advising, rigorous academic preparation for pharmacy prerequisite classes, and exposure to pharmacy through a variety of experiences. They will connect with a “near peer” PharmD mentor, shadow clinical pharmacists, and network with faculty and alumni leaders. After the summer program, they will remain connected with the PC3 Assistant Program Manager, their PharmD mentor, and faculty and alumni connections. They will return for a second 10-week summer for additional academic preparation, mentoring, shadowing experiences, and an opportunity to engage in health disparities research.
