Clinical Veterinarian, Division of Comparative Medicine – Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown’s Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) oversees the Research Resource Facility (RRF) which supports animal research and teaching activities for the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and the Main Campus.

Job Overview

The Clinical Veterinarian, a leader and role model within the Division of Comparative Medicine, supports Georgetown University’s research vision and mission within the Animal Care and Use Program, providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research. They provide professional veterinary care and maintenance of research animals, and as needed, and may serve as an acting University Attending Veterinarian in their  absence.

Major responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides hands-on clinical care for the colony of old-world primates and participation as needed in medical research surgical procedures.
  • Performs veterinary exams and diagnostic tests, and maintains the health of the colony.
  • Provides care to all research animals in assigned facilities, including the observation of animals, diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions, prescription and monitoring of necessary medications, and maintenance of animal health records.
  • Supervises technical staff during clinical work; provides oversight of regulatory compliance, consultation and training for animal users; and teaches graduate and professional students as assigned.
  • Performs quality assurance for campus animal facilities; serves as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); reviews (pre- and post-review) animal use protocols as needed; and assists investigators in the development of their research protocols.
  • Provides care of laboratory animals in a safe, humane, and sanitary manner using equipment and established procedures, including safe handling of animals, materials, and equipment exposed to hazardous (biohazardous, radiological, or chemical) agents.
  • Follows standard operating procedures and maintains compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, the Clinical Veterinarian fulfills veterinary clinical duties as necessary based on the standard of care for veterinary medicine, veterinary judgment, research demand, the applicable federal legislature, or by supervisory instruction

They are a contributing and accountable member of the veterinary team, exemplifying teamwork in interacting, training, and assisting animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and research faculty and staff in a professional and solution-oriented manner.

Qualifications

  • A US-licensed veterinarian with experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine – specifically, possess a current veterinary license in at least one state in the United States as well as the ability to become licensed in the District of Columbia and to obtain a practitioner’s DEA registration within 6-9 months of employment.
  • Significant clinical experience at an academic or other research institution with a diverse range of species
  • Working knowledge and experience with essential laboratory animal husbandry responsibilities and techniques
  • Comfortable with clinical oversight of a variety of species – including but not limited to o preventative health, colony management, medical treatments, general anesthesia and euthanasia procedure, and other duties as appropriate. T
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and mature problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with computer skills – for example Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom
  • Willingness and availability for on-call coverage - weekends, emergencies, and holidays as needed

Preferred qualifications, competencies, and experience

  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) specialty board certification or eligibility with three or more years postdoctoral experience
  • Experience in nonhuman primate medicine and behavior, rodent surgical models, rodent breeding colonies, genetically-altered animals, and rodent medicine

Essential: The Clinical Veterinarian is considered essential personnel and is required to be available weekends, snow/emergency days and University holidays for veterinary on-call coverage.
