Job Description


The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the lab of Drs. Allan Tsung and Hongji Zhang. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in planning, design, execution, and management of research projects in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory investigating cancer in the Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Participate in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studies
  • Design and execute complex laboratory experiments
  • Perform advanced molecular and cellular techniques
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret research data
  • Assist with development and implementation of new and/or revised research methodologies and techniques
  • Test experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilization
  • Assist in establishment of controls, criteria and research standards
  • Perform critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertaken
  • Assist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at national and conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents
  • Assist principal investigator in the preparation of proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research
  • Coordinate laboratory activities and work assignments of research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staff
  • Oversee and coordinate periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates must have a PhD or MD in an appropriate biological/health science by the appointment start date. Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required. Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
