Full Job Description

 Under the direction of the College President, the Vice President of Instruction (VPI) is responsible for all duties implied in that role, including but not limited to; continuous improvement of teaching and learning, oversight and evaluation of credit instructional programs; enrollment and schedule management; the management, planning, budgeting, administration, and evaluation of curriculum programs; the management and evaluation of curriculum faculty and staff; and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. Also responsible for the off-site locations: Ashe Campus and Alleghany Center

Essential Duties Summary
The position includes the following responsibilities and expectations:
  • Provide leadership in the continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for members of the Academic and Support Services Council and their respective areas in the coordination, planning, design, delivery, review and evaluation of instructional programs.
  • Serve as a member of the Administrative Council representing instruction.
  • Provide leadership in recruitment, selection, orientation, mentoring, professional development, evaluation, and retention of faculty and staff for instructional areas.
  • Formulate and recommend policies relating to curriculum programs.
  • Plan and articulate needs for space, materials, equipment and personnel for instructional areas.
  • Develop and administer budgets for instructional areas.
  • Coordinate with Instructional Support and Student Services the The North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) , concurrent enrollment and distance learning opportunities with area high schools.
  • Provide vision and leadership in the use of technology to improve teaching and learning.
  • Provide leadership for creating a quality student-centered environment, institutional effectiveness, institutional accreditation and global education.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for off-site locations of Ashe Campus and Alleghany Center.
  • Other duties as required by the President.

 


This position has leadership and curriculum oversight responsibilities at the following locations:
  • Main Campus, Wilkesboro, NC
  • Herring Hall (Health Sciences), Wilkesboro, NC
  • Ashe Campus, West Jefferson, NC
  • Alleghany Center, Sparta, NC

Required Qualifications
  • An earned master’s degree,
  • At least three-year record of accomplishment as a dean or higher at the college level or districtwide leadership of instructional programs at the K12 level,
  • Demonstrated skill in planning and budgeting, supervision, management of human resources and fiscal affairs in an educational setting,
  • Successful teaching experience and additional experience one or more of the following areas is required: instructional leadership, learning resources, institutional effectiveness, distance learning, accreditation, or data analysis, and
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated leadership skills and experience with accreditation are required.

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference is given to candidates with leadership experience in an Instructional Division and/or expertise in teaching and learning.
  • Doctorate or progress toward doctorate preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with working with multiple campus locations preferred, but not required.

 


Physical Demands
This position operates in a professional academic office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. This position regularly requires long hours and minimal weekend work. Travel as appropriate to achieve community college objectives, attend meetings, and implement strategic initiatives.

Essential functions of this position require lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
 
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking, and standing are required regularly, incumbents may be required to kneel, crouch/squat, crawl, climb, stoop, turn/twist, balance, reach, or handle.
 
Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills are important.

May require working some evenings and weekends.
