POSITION DETAILS

The mission of the Zicklin School of Business is to educate future business leaders by developing intellectual curiosity, strong integrity, a commitment to social responsibility, and global competence through impactful research and quality academic programs. Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Zicklin School of Business and responsible for the strategic, operational, and financial direction of the School. The Dean will work in close partnership with other deans and executive officers of the College and serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet.

The Dean is responsible for leadership of the Zicklin School of Business, planning and development, and for managing its programs to further enhance its quality and reputation. The Dean collaboratively sets standards for intellectual engagement and accomplishment; provides strategic vision and operational leadership based on best practices; ensures the accreditation of the School; vigorously promotes diversity, equity and inclusion in all of the School’s practices; builds community across faculty, sta¿, and students; ensures students are served by academic programs of the highest quality and e¿ectiveness through assessment and continuous improvement; oversees systems and processes that ensure academic integrity and rigor, including program assessment, program review, departmental planning, and accreditation activities; advances improvements in faculty life; promotes and supports faculty scholarship and grant/contract-seeking pre- and post-tenure; encourages the use of proven e¿ective pedagogies and experimentation in pedagogy and programming; oversees processes for faculty hiring and retention; builds external partnerships to support student academic and career preparation and faculty development and research.

The Dean is supported in academic administration by three Associate Deans and a Director of Finance and Administration. Direct reports also include seven academic department chairs and the directors of five research centers (Weissman Center for International Business, Field Center for Entrepreneurship, Wasserman Trading Floor and Subotnick Financial Services Center, Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity, and the Newman Real Estate Institute).

The Dean will provide innovative leadership to promote outstanding research and teaching programs and to build partnerships with alumni and business leaders that will enhance the student experience and bring significant new resources to the School. S/he will be an entrepreneurial and visionary leader who will inspire faculty, students, and staff to engage in the work of promoting the School’s upward trajectory in the New York business community.

As part of the President’s Cabinet, the Dean manages the implementation of the college’s strategic plan on the school level in close collaboration with all members of the academic leadership team. The Dean works with the vice presidents, deans, associate provosts, senior administrators, and sta¿ across the College to conduct day-to-day operations, improve student success, and further the work of the School. The Dean formulates fundraising priorities for the School in collaboration with the Provost, faculty, and the Academic Council. The dean works closely with faculty on research grant planning activities and works in partnership with the Vice President for College Advancement and the development team to advance the case for funding engaging in fundraising activities to achieve support and develop additional ¿nancial resources for the School. The Dean will position the Zicklin School as a leading regional, national, and international business school; and strengthen and expand relationships with both external and internal constituencies (both domestic and global).

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

The William Kooyker Dean of the Zicklin School of Business must hold a PhD and record of academic accomplishments suitable for appointment as Professor in the Zicklin School of Business as well as a record of academic leadership at the level of department chair (or equivalent) or higher.

The qualities being sought in the next Dean include: unquestioned integrity, deep appreciation of academic qualities, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, strong administrative abilities, high energy, political astuteness, deep commitment to diversity, and a personal style that engenders trust and respect. S/he will be a a good listener, well organized, and visible on campus and in the community. The Dean must have a great passion for the role of public higher education and be equally passionate about the special history and mission of Baruch College and CUNY. S/he will have a record of success in research, scholarship, or professional experience that would support an appointment to the rank of professor in the School.

The successful candidate will have many of the following skills, qualities, and credentials:

  • Demonstrated capacity to lead with innovative vision to articulate a clear identity and strategy for competitive success;
  • A clear commitment to undergraduate and graduate business education, and research;
  • A broad understanding of the challenges facing business education in the United States and around the world;
  • The ability to encourage, develop, and evaluate teaching, scholarly research, service and creative initiatives across the School;
  • The ability to work cooperatively and effectively with administrators, faculty, students, staff, and external constituencies; an appreciation and understanding of the need for collaboration and synergy among these groups to make critical decisions on academic priorities and the allocation of resources.
  • Evidence of successful involvement in and an appetite for development initiatives, and the ability to work effectively with alumni and donors;
  • Proven management and financial skills with a record of success in academic administration or business
  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for engaging business leaders in the work of the School; connecting students and faculty with opportunities to address challenges facing the business community;
  • An appreciation of and support for a strong system of shared governance;
  • A demonstrated achievements to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion and demonstrated success in working within diverse communities;
  • The ability to enhance and expand the School’s online/hybrid courses and programs;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AACSB accreditation processes and standards;
  • An accomplished leader with the experience, courage, and energy to manage organizational change, incorporating the College’s values and mission;
  • Capability to work in a large, complex, unionized system of several institutions; and
  • An interest in being a visible member of College life and connected to business and civic life in New York

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $375K to $400K, from combined public and private sources. Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
