Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Student Counselor. Reporting directly to the NJSTEP Assistant Dean of Community Relations, this position is responsible for ongoing tracking and support of released and matriculating NJ-STEP students statewide.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following.
  • Serve as the community college support representative for NJ-STEP and the primary tracker of potential Rutgers Mountainview applicants
  • Act as a liaison; initiate contact and develop relationships with community college personnel, partnered 4-year colleges, and DOC/halfway house facility staff, and develop partnerships and processes that enable NJ-STEP students transitioning into the community to continue and complete college degree work
  • Work to directly link transitioning students to financial aid processes through pre-release visits and seeks to formally integrate relevant reentry and support services for program participants across multiple campuses post-release
  • Assess student needs during pre-release assessments and develop appropriate programmatic responses for post-release
  • Provide or arrange the provision of personal motivation, academic, career, financial aid, financial literacy and study skills, utilizing appropriate research literature and recognized best practices. This includes advising and assistance in navigating correctional reentry, assessment centers and halfway houses; coordinating and facilitating specialized workshops for student participants; and securing contacts and opportunities for NJ-STEP students in regional community colleges
  • Identify and assist in developing career planning activities with students and identify potential community partners for internship and employment opportunities to pave a career pathway for NJ-STEP students’ post-graduation
  • Assist in all aspects of administering NJ-STEP as needed, including managing all clerical tasks, program communications, and supervision of program interns or field placements
  • Attend appropriate community program meetings and events on behalf of the NJ-STEP program
  • Track all service delivery and generates formative reports as needed
  • Report program updates, needs, student issues and concerns to the Mountainview Director
  • Requires a solid understanding of, and investment in, the mission of the NJ-STEP, which assists previously incarcerated individuals in earning college degrees.

This position is contingent upon the continuation of grant funding.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Requires a minimum of two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have excellent communication, writing skills, and organizational skills
  • Experience with academic advising, mentoring, program coordination, career counseling and/or learning assistance required
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with opportunity programs, New Jersey State Department of Corrections, prisons, incarcerated populations or reentry populations preferred
  • Preference may be given to candidates whose background is similar to the target population, or individuals with other experience or direct knowledge of incarceration and reentry processes.

  • May be required to lift up to 15 pounds to be carried up to 100 feet
  • Must be comfortable working in Correctional Environments
  • Must be able to obtain clearance to enter New Jersey Department of Corrections facilities within 45 days of hire
