Assistant Professor Position in Computer and Information Science

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Computer and Information Science (College of Engineering -CIS ) beginning in September 2023. The department is particularly interested in candidates with research focus in the areas of cybersecurity and data science. The candidates are expected to enhance and support the university’s initiatives in cybersecurity and data science within the department, the College of Engineering (College of Engineering ) and the College of Arts & Sciences (College of Arts and Sciences ). Successful candidates will join a world-class research team with existing strengths in cyber defense and operations, unmanned aerial vehicle security, data analytics and machine learning.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is located in the beautiful ocean side community of Dartmouth, about an hour south of Boston, half-hour east of Providence, and half-hour west of Cape Cod. It offers a world-class education to more than 9,300 undergraduate and graduate students each year in over 40 undergraduate and 23 graduate programs offered by the College of Engineering, College of Nursing, Charlton College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Visual and Performing Arts, School of Law and School for Marine Science and Technology. The Computer and Information Science Department currently has 14 full-time faculty members. The department offers B.S. and M.S. degree programs in Computer Science, joint B.S. and M.S. degree programs with the Department of Mathematics in Data Science (https://www.umassd.edu/data-science/ ), and a Ph.D. program in Engineering & Applied Science (EAS) with a Computer Science and Information Science option. In recent years, Computer Science faculty have received multiple external research grants from the NSF, NIH, ONR, Department of the Army, and corporations, including an NSF CAREER award and an NIH R01 award. The department plays a leadership role in the University’s Cybersecurity Center (https://www.umassd.edu/cybersecurity-center/ ), which received the National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research from the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security in 2020.

Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program; teach and advise undergraduate and graduate (MS & PhD) students; contribute to university and professional service; foster interdisciplinary collaborations; and engage in college and university diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in Computer Science, or a closely related field, at the time of appointment, and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and scholarly research as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong candidates will have significant research experience in cybersecurity and data science.  Postdoctoral research experience is highly desirable. We are especially interested in receiving qualified applications from scholars historically underrepresented in science, mathematics and engineering, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
