Job Description


The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Bimal Desai. The long-term goal of the Desai lab is to understand the role of electrical signals at the crossroads of host defense, inflammation and tissue homeostasis. Current projects in the Desai lab focus on defining the ion channel-mediated electrical signals controlling; (1) cell autonomous immune responses; (2) the contextual programming of organ-resident myeloid cells; (3) neuroimmune crosstalk during neurodegeneration and acute brain injury. Applicants must have a PhD in the physical or biological sciences, or an M.D. degree with 3-5 years of graduate research experience. The candidates are expected to have a genuine enthusiasm for experimental research, an inclination to work productively in teams and a respect for diversity of both people and viewpoints. Technical expertise in one these specialties is highly sought: patch clamp electrophysiology, chemical biology, microscopy or molecular biology. Preference will be given to candidates with a conceptual grounding in one of the following fields: physiology, immunology or neuroscience.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: PhD or MD
  • Experience: 3-5 years of graduate research experience

Anticipated Hiring Rage: $54,000-65,000 annual

Salary will be commensurate with education, skills, and experience.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment and a health screening per University policy.
