Position Summary

The Sakalidis Lab at Michigan State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a project focusing on chestnut disease management that is funded through a USDA/MDARD Specialty Crop Block Grant. This Research Associate will oversee implementation and evaluation of tactics designed to mitigate impacts of brown rot disease on chestnut fruit and to better elucidate the pathogen community contributing to disease in commercial chestnut orchards. 

MSU has a vibrant plant science community comprising of more than 150 faculty members conducting a wide range of plant research spanning the lab-to-field continuum in both natural and agricultural ecosystems. PSM is a multi-disciplinary department with faculty appointed in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR; http://www.canr.msu.edu/ ). The nascent Michigan chestnut industry is an exciting industry to work with. As an emerging crop, there are opportunities to have a significant impact on grower success. The MSU Chestnut Team enjoys a close working relationship with the chestnut industry, with researchers and extension personnel cooperating with growers to address the priority needs of the industry through multiple interdisciplinary projects. The MSU Chestnut Team is comprised of members from multiple departments including Entomology, Ag Engineering, Plant, Soil and Microbial Science, Forestry and Extension.  

The position is available immediately, but the incumbent must be able to start by Spring 2023 at the latest. The appointment will be initially for 12 months with the possibility of one additional year based on satisfactory performance and continuation of funding. The position will work with the PIs, and assist with the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Forestry, Plant or Tree Physiology


Minimum Requirements

A highly dedicated and qualified individual with a doctoral degree in Forestry, Plant or Tree Physiology, Plant Pathology, Entomology, or a closely related field.  Experience with field work involving fungicide applications and data analysis.  The Ph.D. must be completed at the time of employment. The selected candidate must also meet eligibility requirements for work in the U.S. by the start date. 


Desired Qualifications

Previous experience with trees, lab work, microscopy, fungi, and microbiomes. A proven track record of scientific publications, initiative, independence, leadership, excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills are essential.
