Job Description

The primary role will be to work with faculty, research scientists and students on the development and application of laser based approaches for stand-off measurement of gas, surface and plasma properties. Experience in experimental methods, data collection and data analysis is expected.

The position will provide an opportunity for a post doctoral candidate to develop new concepts for advanced laser-based measurements of gases, surfaces and plasma properties that are relevant to aerospace. These may include measurement of high speed nonequilibrium gas dynamics, combustion processes, high temperature surface degradation, plasma interactions, energy deposition, detection of hazardous materials, and power generation. Research will leverage recent developments of advanced laser diagnostics, which include temperature, velocity and density imaging by spectrally filtered Rayleigh and Raman scattering, molecular flow tagging by nonlinear excitation, standoff detection of selected atoms and molecules by radar scattering from laser generated ionization, and molecular detection by UV laser excited backward lasing in air.

Responsibilities:

  • Development and implementation of methods for remote measurement of gas, surface and plasma properties and quantification of the accuracy of those measurements including the effects that may contribute to loss of fidelity.

Required Education:

  • Doctoral Degree

Preferred Education:

  • Doctoral Degree in science, engineering, physics, or chemistry.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in laboratory procedures, data collection and data analysis.
  • Experience in handling standard laboratory equipment such as lasers, oscilloscopes, high performance cameras, and possible experience in the operation of wind tunnels or plasma devices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of spectroscopy and laser technology or understanding of gas, surface or plasma physics in areas relevant to aerospace applications.

All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.

Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Veterans/Disability Employer committed to diversity.
