Following a highly successful recruitment program over the last year, and the recent retirement of a senior staff member, James Cook University’s (JCU) College of Medicine and Dentistry is pleased to announce the recruitment for an Associate Professor in Clinical Dentistry. Whilst applications are welcome from candidates of all backgrounds, a particular emphasis on Oral Medicine and Special Needs Dentistry would be advantageous to complement our new and enhanced clinical academic team. This is a full-time and continuing role based at our beautiful campus in tropical North Queensland, the Cairns Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield. WHAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH IN THE ROLE
Based at our state-of-the-art clinical teaching facilities in Cairns, you will lead the development, implementation, and delivery of high-quality teaching in Clinical Dentistry at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You’ll provide leadership and direction in the development and operation of components of JCU’s Dentistry program in your areas of special interest. Contributing to the supervision and assessment of student Dental Practitioners performing general dental care for patients, you’ll also be actively involved in the academic life of the College of Medicine and Dentistry with extensive opportunities to participate in collaborative research and innovation, both nationally and internationally within the College and the Academy.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
With a degree qualification in Dentistry, relevant postgraduate qualifications and experience, you’re well-versed in undergraduate and/or postgraduate clinical teaching. You’re an exceptional communicator with experience in relating to a range of stakeholders, an ability to write effectively and competency in the use of information and communication technology. You demonstrate highly developed interpersonal and management skills as you effectively lead and mentor staff and students to achieve successful outcomes.

Position Overview

The Associate Professor, Clinical Dentistry leads the development, implementation, and delivery of high-quality teaching in Clinical Dentistry, with teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The incumbent is actively involved in the academic life of the College of Medicine and Dentistry and participates in collaborative research and innovation, both nationally and internationally within the College and the Academy.

Principal Accountabilities

1. Contribute to the continuing development of the education experience of JCU Dentistry students, by providing lectures, tutorials, integrative sessions, and marking.
2. Provide leadership and direction in the development and operation of components of the Dentistry program of special interest to the appointee.
3. Provide clinical teaching and supervision of students, delivering 3 to 4 sessions of teaching and supervision per week.
4. Lead and contribute to research including the mentoring and supervision of students, conducting independent or collaborative research within the College of Medicine and Dentistry, and involvement in the preparation and submission of research proposals to external funding agencies.
5. Attend Division and/or College meetings, and serve on Division/College committees, as needed.
6. Support the University's commitment to the principles of Reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
7. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
8. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

1. The Associate Professor, Clinical Dentistry is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.

2. The Associate Professor, Clinical Dentistry is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations.

3. The Associate Professor, Clinical Dentistry is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

• It is a requirement of this position to be able to travel to other JCU locations in Queensland which may include overnight stays.
• It is a requirement of this position to occasionally work outside of the ordinary span of hours.

Essential

1. Degree qualification in Dentistry and relevant postgraduate qualifications and experience.
2. Significant experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate clinical teaching.
3. Highly developed interpersonal and management skills.
4. Demonstrated high level communication skills with experience in relating to a range of stakeholders, ability to write effectively and competency in the use of information and communication technology.
5. Ability to work independently, collaboratively and collegially to contribute to a team environment.

Desirable

1. An understanding of the delivery of oral health care to rural and remote communities and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
