BACKGROUND

Project FIND is a well-regarded nonprofit organization founded over 50 years ago to help low- and moderate income and homeless seniors live independent and productive lives. Operating on Manhattan’s west side, Project FIND provides affordable and supportive housing to over 600 older adults in three residential buildings and is the service provider for newly completed 78 unit senior residence operated by Fairstead Partners. In addition, Project FIND operates four senior centers which supply meals, recreational activities, arts and other enrichment programs, and social services to more than three thousand seniors annually. Its in-reach homeless plus program provides showers, clothing, as well as access to medical, psychiatric and housing placement services.

Oversight and management of the four community senior centers is a key area for Project FIND, which is the responsibility of the Director of Community Services (DCS). As such, it is critically important to find a caring and experienced individual to join the Project FIND team as the next Director.

THE POSITION


Project FIND is seeking a skilled manager and leader to become its next Director of Community Services (DCS). Reporting to and working closely with the new Executive Director and the Associate Executive Director, the DCS is the key management leader responsible for ensuring the formulation and delivery of high-quality services at the centers, including regulatory compliance, satisfaction of performance targets and fiscal discipline. Aided by the Assistant Director of Community Services, this position supervises the four center directors and closely monitors the full range of programing contained within. The centers’ $4.1 million budget is funded by the New York City Department for the Aging (DftA) and there are greater than 50 employees who care for the seniors served at the centers.

As a member of the senior management team , the DCS works with property management and social services departments to magnify the reach and effectiveness of all of the agency combined resources. The DCS must be highly intelligent and a self-starter who is committed to the organization’s core mission. The DCS must be able to work closely with the Executive Director, the Associate Executive Director, and staff to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork. In addition, the person in this position will be diplomatic, analytical, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


Supervisory

  • Direct supervision of Assistant Director of Community Services and Center Directors
  • Responsible for the hiring, evaluation, discipline, and professional development of supervisees
  • Convenes and leads center director team meetings

Programmatic

  • Responsible for ensuring that center programs vibrantly address center members’ evolving interests and promote health and wellbeing
  • Runs point on RFP or grant opportunities and submissions in coordination with Executive Director, Director of Development and External Affairs and Controller
  • Seeks and cultivates external partnerships to enhance center offerings
  • Collaborates with the Director of Social Services and Director of Property Management and Housing services to promote interdepartmental coordination and problem solving
  • Monitors monthly activity reports to assess effectiveness of programing and ensure compliance with contractual service targets

Contract/Fiscal

  • Reviews monthly fiscal reports and monitors expenditures to ensure adherence to contract budgets
  • Ensure contract, program and regulatory compliance

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a passionate, hardworking, innovative and hands on person with an abiding concern and admiration for older adults.

  • At least 5 years managerial level experience at a Department for the Aging Congregate (DftA) Program.
  • Knowledge of DftA mandates affecting all aspects of center-based programs – food, social services, program services and facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years professional experience aligned to this position.
  • Proven organizational and supervisory track record.
  • Sharp problem solving, time management, verbal and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Ability to mentor and commitment to team development.
  • Ability to function independently as well as interdependently in a fluid work environment.
  • Technologically current. Comfortable with IT concepts, devices, systems and databases. Knowledge of Access, Excel, as well as HHS Accelerator and/or other city contracting on-line platforms.
