Job Description

BACKGROUND

Project FIND is a well-regarded nonprofit organization founded over 50 years ago to help low- and moderate income and homeless seniors live independent and productive lives. Operating on Manhattan’s west side, Project FIND provides affordable and supportive housing to over 600 older adults in three residential buildings and is the service provider for a newly completed 78 unit senior residence operated by Fairstead Partners. In addition, Project FIND operates four senior centers which supply meals, recreational activities, arts and other enrichment programs, and social services to more than three thousand seniors annually. Its in-reach homeless plus program provides showers, clothing, as well as access to medical, psychiatric and housing placement services.

Leading the staff of approximately 100 individuals in this work has been Project FIND’s Executive Director, David Gillcrist. David has recently announced that he will be leaving the organization and handing over the leadership to the current Associate Executive Director, Mark Jennings by the end of 2022. As such, Project FIND is seeking to hire a new Associate Executive Director to support Mark as he transitions to his new role.

THE POSITION

Project FIND is seeking a skilled manager and leader to become its next Associate Executive Director (AED). Reporting to and working closely with the new Executive Director, the AED will be responsible for overseeing multiple programs. The final reporting structure will be based on the skills of the identified candidate. The AED may take supervision charge of the operations and administration, housing portfolio, senior centers, support programs, and strategic planning for the organization. The AED provides mission-based leadership to the Project FIND staff and partners and leads community engagement efforts and outreach services for one of New York’s most vulnerable populations. They will manage programmatic operations and continuity, ensuring exceptional program delivery, and cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships with local agencies, organizations, and funders.

The Associate Executive Director must be highly intelligent and a self-starter who shares the Board’s commitment to the organization’s core mission. They should have a proven ability to foster the growth of an organization, demonstrate significant accomplishments and past successes, be hands-on, a strategic thinker, planner, and problem solver, and be comfortable driving change. Excellent communication and negotiation skills are critical. The AED must be able to work closely with the Executive Director, the Board, and staff to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork. In addition, the person in this position will be diplomatic, analytical, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

· Provide supervision, guidance, and coordination to the organization’s Fiscal, Property Management and Housing Services, Human Resources, and Social Services departments to enable them to fulfill their unique roles.

· Provide direct supervision to the senior executives of aforementioned departments to ensure fulfillment of contractual, reporting, and regulatory obligations, as well as performance targets. Conducts annual performance evaluations of staff.

· Provide fiscal oversight of residential properties, developing annual budgets, and tracking performance. Work with the Executive Director to develop and track annual agency budget.

· Heads HR Services Unit. Develops and updates Agency’s policies and procedures for on-boarding of staff, leave requests, disciplinary action, et al., and provides guidance of same to agency staff. Manages contracts for HR services, as well as serving as main point of contact with Employment Attorney.

· Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure coordination between the departments that the AED oversees and those that the Executive Director oversees directly: Community Services and Development and External Relations.

· Maintains excellent working relationship with Board of Directors and serves as lead staff person on two board committees: Program & Services and Housing Services.

· Work closely with the Executive Director to oversee necessary capital improvements on Project FIND’s residential buildings, and affordable housing expansion efforts.

· Collaborate with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other senior staff members, as necessary, in essential leadership activities such as strategic and organizational planning, budgeting, and human resources.

· Point person for agency on IT acquisitions, services and contracts. Presently oversees contract with WCA, implementation of AWARDS, YARDI, Jotorm, and HR Bamboo.

· Represents Project FIND at conferences, professional associations, and other public venues, including attending Community Board meetings, in order to further the development of the agency. May serve on relevant boards as well.

· Collaborate with and provide oversight on additional activities as requested by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

· At least eight years of executive management experience at a nonprofit agency of a similar size and complexity.

· Experience with and knowledge of the unique issues that affect elders, care management, and aging-in-place. Prior experience working for an agency that provides services for the aging or a relative vulnerable population is preferred.

· Experience with the management of government-assisted housing.

· An educational background in a social service discipline. An LCSW/LMSW or DSW degree is preferred.

· A solid understanding of and working relationships with the social service/human service providers in the organization’s catchment area.

· Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; a diplomatic individual who is capable of forging relationships both within Project FIND as well as out in the community.

· A hands-on, approachable management style with the ability to work closely with the Executive Director and the Board and effectively oversee and motivate staff in a manner that promotes inclusivity, cooperation, and teamwork.

· A strategic thinker; visionary, innovative and technologically savvy with interest in and capacity to grow and scale the organization.

· A commitment to and understanding of Project FIND’s mission and the ability to convey a vision of its strategic future.

· Comfort and tact in communicating with the individuals who receive services from Project FIND, as well as with other staff, executives, community-based organization leadership, elected officials, public agency administrators, etc.

· Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong public speaking ability. Strong negotiation skills. A good listener.

· A solid understanding of financial management, including budget preparation, analysis and reporting. Familiarity with financial software programs.

· Outstanding organizational skills, adept at planning, prioritizing multiple and varied responsibilities, delegating, implementation and facilitation.
