Background:
The Building Trades Employers Association (BTEA) is the voice of New York’s construction industry, founded in 1903 to help resolve the disputes among the different building trades unions. Today, it is the construction contractor’s unified advocate for construction safety standards, professional development, government affairs and public relations,and is committed to fostering communication between public officials, public and private owners, labor and the general public.

BTEA’s activities are dedicated to creating a building environment that meets the highest standards, integrity, cost efficiency, productivity and value that contributes to improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. The member contractors create substantial, quality and sustainable jobs throughout New York and operate the safest job sites in the country, while delivering the highest quality projects at the best value for private, public and institutional owners.

Position:
The Building Trades Employers’ Association is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial leader to be the next President and CEO. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned manager, with deep knowledge of real estate, community economic development programs, workforce development and labor, and the regional markets in order to leverage strong relationships with the public, private, philanthropic and nonprofit communities. A critical component to the job includes maintaining a strong and visible "public presence" for the organization. That responsibility is a key element to sustain the BTEA's success in advancing its government affairs agenda.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and CEO will provide the strategic direction and guidance for all aspects BTEA’s work. Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills are critical. The President and CEO must be comfortable and tactful in communicating with the individuals who benefit from BTEA’s work as well as with corporate executives, local business leaders, elected officials, public agency administrators, funders, and the community. They must be able to work closely with the Board and staff in a transparent, honest fashion that promotes inclusiveness, cooperation, and teamwork. In addition, they will be bright, diplomatic, analytical, creative, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor, humility, and compassion.

Responsibilities:

· Manage and oversee finances and administration of the organization with an annual budget of $2.1-2.3 million

· Assist in fundraising for Safety Conference and Leadership Reception

· Actively participate and meet regularly with organizations like the Real Estate Board of New York, NYC Partnership and Small Business Council, as well as community- based organizations. Attend their conferences and provide sponsorship support.

· Meet on regular basis with labor officials including Building and Construction Trades Council President, individual Business managers i.e. Carpenters, Laborers, Electricians, Painters, Operating Engineers, Iron Workers, their Labor-Management government affairs staff, President of NYC Central Labor Council and President of NYS AFL-CIO. Attend and participate and sponsor key Labor events from the above Labor organizations, especially political events

· Manage Compliance with NYS and NYC Lobbying Laws and Political Contributions in consultation with BTEA independent Compliance Law Firm

· Develop an Annual Business Plan with both priorities and budget

· Organize agendas for all BTEA Committees; Government Affairs, Safety, M/WBE and special committees, with Co-Chair volunteers and Association Executives for monthly meetings as well as alternating Quarterly Executive Committee and Board of Governors meetings

· Research and writing of policy position papers on legislative and regulatory issues

· Provide public testimony on NYC and NYS legislative and regulatory hearings and follow­ up work with staffs in pursuit of policy agenda and specific rules and proposed laws

· Meet with key members of City Council and staffs on regular basis

· Contribute to and attend political fundraisers

· Meet with key members of the Governor's office and staff in order to advocate for issues affecting the organizations

· Meet with Key Senate and Assembly Legislative leaders chairing committees for issues of importance to the BTEA membership and their staffs

· Meet regularly with and keep in communication with key members of the press: Crain's NY Business, Commercial Observer, Real Deal, Real Estate Weekly, Empire Report, NY Times, Daily News and NY Post

Qualifications:

• Minimum of ten years senior level experience in real estate, community development finance, government affairs, construction, economic development, or related field.
• Demonstrated commitment to BTEA’s mission.
• Demonstrated ability to attract and sustain funding.
• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, real estate or related fields. Advanced degree preferred.

• Demonstrated track record in providing leadership for the development of strategic vision.
• Ability to establish priorities that align with a strategic plan and manage multiple agendas and programs effectively.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience speaking publicly in diverse forums.
• Fluency using and understanding data to inform decision making.
• Entrepreneurial spirit; ability to seek out creative approaches to community issues.
• Proven ability to work in culturally and ethnically diverse environments.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire trust and motivate staff and partners.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and organizations, including senior level corporate, philanthropic, public sector representatives and community leaders.
• Demonstrated management experience, including staff development, financial management, and office administration.
