Description

The Zemurray-Stone Post-Doctoral Fellows in Latin American Studies are intended to foster the professional development of gifted scholars and specialists in media to enrich the Stone Center for Latin American Studies’ vigorous research environment, and to foster creative exchange across the Center's research community. We seek candidates engaged in scholarly or creative work on topics related to existing areas of institutional strength. Fellows are expected to participate in the full intellectual life of the Center and to contribute to the conceptualization and development of innovative digital media platforms during their residency. Fellows sometimes also offer an advanced interdisciplinary seminar on a subject of their choice during the spring of the fellowship year.

The Stone Center, which includes a core community of 70+ faculty across a broad spectrum of disciplinary and professional fields, invites applications for a one-year post-doctoral fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Stone Center solicits scholars with a strong grounding in research methodologies and interdisciplinary curriculum and program development. The successful candidate will work jointly with the Stone Center administrative and leadership team on the project to celebrate 100 years of Latin American scholarship at Tulane University.

The Stone Center will celebrate 100 years of research and teaching in the field of Latin American Studies at Tulane University in 2024. In preparation, we are in the process of assembling documentation of the history of this undertaking at the university. Such histories are typically presented and published in books and critical essays, but the recent and rapid development of media technology offers many new possibilities for presenting these histories in new electronic audiovisual and rhetorical forms.

To support this initiative, the Stone Center seeks applications from scholars engaged in media studies and digital humanities whose creative and professional advancement would benefit from collaborating in the development of a series of experimental prototypes that explore the future of new digital forms of communication and aesthetic expression to convey the impacts—past and present—of Latin American Studies on Tulane students and the field at large.

During their residency, the Zemurray-Stone Fellow will help us continue the documentation and celebration of our institutional history. Alongside Stone Center Administrators and Staff they will curate and organize documents, interviews, conversations, debates, forums, presentations, and sound, video, images and print/ephemera, into a cohesive, creative, and engaging multi-media narrative. Central to this project is a commitment to the production of digital content featuring the faculty, staff, and students who have played an important role in the history of the Stone Center. Addtionally, we hope to capture the imagination of students, parents, and potential employers by conveying to them the promise of area studies as an interdisciplinary field of study that prepares students for lives and careers that are enrichened by a deep familiarity and respect for cultural difference.

We encourage applications from a broad range of disciplines and professional training who have a deep interest in Latin American and area studies as an interdisciplinary field of study. Applicants must be familiar with the software platforms used to produce their digital scholarship, in addition to basic curatorial and archiving skills.

Fellowships are one-year, residential, full-time appointments with a stipend of $48,940 plus benefits. Travel and moving expenses are not supported. Applicants who are ABD must complete their Ph.D. by May 2023.
