Summary of Job Duties:

**This position is exposed to laboratory animals**
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Teresita Bellido, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology. The Research Assistant will assist the lab manager, senior technicians, and postdoctoral fellows, in the overall organization of the laboratory, provide support for all animal experimentation, mouse databases and mouse colony maintenance, assist with regulation compliance and inspections, assist with writing of animal use protocols (AUP) and standard operating procedures for animal experimentation (SOPs), maintain consistency in all experimental protocols, provide oversight on ordering of laboratory supplies, write new experimental and animal surgical protocols, perform technical procedures related to analysis of bone and muscle by histomorphometric approaches, perform and/or provide training and oversight for all surgical protocols in the laboratory, provide training to new technical personal, fellows and students in protocols and procedures involving animals, and maintain a seamless interaction with the director and personnel of the University Animal Laboratory regarding animal health and animal care charges. In addition, this person will coordinate the agenda for the general lab meeting of the PI research group, prepare the agenda and write the minutes and action items and will also coordinate all other research meetings as needed. The successful applicant must be able to organize complex projects, provide attention to detail, communicate effectively and contribute information and ideas across all related projects. The position will ensure effective and efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards for staff/program and self and maintain a working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations and the code of conduct for animal research.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biological/health sciences or a related field plus three (3) years of research experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Reference Manager).

  • Must be able to work closely with various laboratory animal specimens.

  • Experience in laboratory procedures, lab management and microbiology techniques preferred.

  • Strong animal experimentation and surgical skills preferred.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall organization of the laboratory.
  • Maintain consistency in all experimental protocols.

  • Participate in strategic planning of animal experimentation.

  • Ensure effective coordination of day-to-day operations and monitor the progress and performance of all experimentation (including in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo approaches).

  • Coordinate the agenda, write the minutes and action items for the meetings of the PI with all members of the research group (general lab meeting) and with subgroups of researchers for specific projects. 

  • Work with the lab manager on all animal experimentation.

  • Perform surgical protocols in the laboratory under the direction of the lab manager, senior technicians, and postdoctoral fellows.

  • Manage mouse databases. 

  • Maintain mouse colonies.

  • Perform technical procedures related to analysis of bone and muscle by histomorphometric approaches.

  • Help the lab manager train new technical personal, fellows and students in protocols and procedures involving animals.

  • Maintain a seamless interaction with the director and personnel of the University Animal Laboratory regarding animal health and animal care charges. 

  •  Work with the lab manager to write/ edit animal use protocols (AUP) as necessary.

  • Write standard operating procedures for animal experimentation (SOPs).

  • Work with the lab manager in developing new AUP and SOPs as needed for new research developed by the PI.

  • Assist the PI in the submission of AUPs and SOPs for institutional regulatory reviews.

  • Assist the PI in the revision of AUPs and SOPs applications requested by the regulatory reviews.

  • Assist the PI and the lab manager with compliance regulations and inspections.

  • Maintain controlled substance inventory.  

  • Maintain records of animal experiments inventory to assure compliance of regulations. 

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
