Description
We are seeking a diverse and creative candidate to fill a postdoctoral position to examine how natural history of mule deer, climate, and interspecific interactions influence population dynamics. Over the past 8 years, Brigham Young University has collaborated with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to capture and GPS collar approximately 5000 individual mule deer across the State of Utah from the Mojave Desert region in the southwest portion of the state to high-elevation montane habitats in the northeast. Captures will continue into the foreseeable future to maintain ~1,300 animals with active collars. In addition, there has been significant effort to recapture a subsample of animals each December and March to determine body condition at the beginning and end of winter from representative regions across the state. Finally, time has been devoted to locating each mortality that has occurred within 48 hours of death to determine probable cause of death. These data along with various climatic variables will be used to help understand factors that influence population dynamics for mule deer across ecoregions of the western US. This research will be a collaborative effort with Brock McMillan and Randy Larsen at Brigham Young University, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the project including idea development, animal captures, data collection/management, data analysis and publication of results. In addition to facilitating the goals of the larger project, the candidate selected will also be encouraged to develop their own independent research within the context of the larger project. Applicants must have relevant Ph.D. experience in wildlife ecology or a closely related discipline. Travel will be required for conducting field work during all times of the year, but most travel will be for one to a few days at a time and travel costs will be covered. There is also budget available for development of independent research. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated aptitude in population ecology and strong leadership skills. Funding for a competitive salary and benefits is available for up to 3 years--renewal for the second and third years contingent on satisfactory performance. There is some flexibility regarding the start date. The position will be based in Provo, Utah and the candidates will train closely with the McMillan/Larsen Wildlife Ecology Lab at Brigham Young University. Interested applicants should send a single pdf file containing curriculum vitae, a 1-2 page statement of research interests, copies of relevant publications, and contact information for three references. Send materials (e-mail preferred) to: Brock McMillan, Department of Plant and Wildlife Sciences, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, email: brock_mcmillan@byu.edu.
