Job Title:
Post-Doctoral Scholar

Department:
ERIK | Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center

Post-Doctoral Scholar

Postdoc Position in Satellite Remote Sensing and Deep Learning of Energy and Water Resources

The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at the Ohio State University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to join an interdisciplinary team working on projects in renewable carbon-free energy and water resources combing remote sensing with advanced deep learning techniques. The objective will be to identify and characterize specific Earth surface features at global scales using massive volumes of multiple air and spaceborne remote sensing datasets and deep learning tools, as well as detect and measure changes through time. The successful applicant will work with another postdoc and graduate student specialized in computer vision AI algorithms and contribute on data management/processing as well as physical interpretation.

Specific tasks will include

  • the acquisition and fusing of disparate data from multiple sources, such as multi-spectral optical (e.g., Sentinel-2, Worldview, Planet), synthetic aperture radar (SAR, e.g., from Sentinel-1), digital elevation models (DEM), and perhaps more (using and building on existing tools in our group),
  • standard remote sensing operations such as orthorectifications, reprojections, co-registration, pan-sharpening and/or other resampling of various raster data to a unified resolution and consistent time-series,
  • physical interpretation of surface feature morphology and remotely sensed characteristics gleaned from different combinations of spectral bands and other data sources to both inform and help analyze AI object detection by your teammates; this may include the use of other types of machine learning tools, such as clustering algorithms.

Qualifications: A PhD in relevant Science and Engineering fields (including but not limited to Earth Sciences, Physics, Astrophysics, Computer Science and Engineering, Geography) with demonstrated prior experience in satellite remote sensing and/or deep learning. Proficiency in python is essential for the latter and preferred for the former. As for any postdoc position, excellent organizational and collaborative skills are required, and strong oral and written communication skills are expected. Applications from historically underrepresented minority candidates are particularly welcome.

The postdoc will be expected to conduct independent, high-quality research; publish papers; and present work at national and international conferences.  Target hiring range is: $60,000 - $65,000 annually.

    Additional Information:

Job Responsibility:  The postdoc(s) will be expected to conduct independent, high-quality research; publish papers; and present work at national and international conferences.

    Breakdown of responsibilities:

    • 40% the acquisition and fusing of disparate data from multiple sources, such as multi-spectral optical (e.g., Sentinel-2, Worldview, Planet), synthetic aperture radar (SAR, e.g., from Sentinel-1), digital elevation models (DEM), and perhaps more (using and building on existing tools in our group),
    • 35%standard remote sensing operations such as orthorectifications, reprojections, co-registration, pan-sharpening and/or other resampling of various raster data to a unified resolution and consistent time-series,
    • 25% physical interpretation of surface feature morphology and remotely sensed characteristics gleaned from different combinations of spectral bands and other data sources to both inform and help analyze AI object detection by your teammates; this may include the use of other types of machine learning tools, such as clustering algorithms.
