Overview

The Senior Animal Technician is responsible for performing various animal husbandry duties in conventional, immunodeficient and transgenic/knockout rodent colonies. In addition, the Senior Animal Technician will maintain animal rooms, monitor rodent colonies, and perform technical duties which may include medical treatments of rodents with minor injuries, emergency separations, and euthanasia.

Responsibilities

  1. Changing rodent cages while strictly adhering to established SOPs. Administer special dietary formulations and medicated water to rodents as defined by research protocols.
  2. Maintaining animal rooms and other facility areas in accordance with accepted standards of sanitation. Procedures involved include sweep, vacuum, wash walls, floors, equipment, and shelving according to schedules for these activities.
  3. Monitoring rodent colonies for sick or injured animals up to twice daily. Recording and reporting such findings in accordance with SOP via Manage Tasks and HMR system apps.
  4. Operating and maintaining laboratory animal husbandry equipment including, but not limited to laminar flow work benches, biosafety cabinets/ hoods, ventilated air racks, autoclaves, sterilizers, and cage wash equipment. Reporting malfunctioning equipment immediately to supervisor.
  5. Technical duties may include medical treatments of rodents with minor injuries, emergency separations, and euthanasia.
  6. Proper record keeping including room logs and health monitoring reports (HMR) as required. This will include use of computerized data collections systems and apps for cage census and health monitoring.
  7. Required to document all tasks completed via ManageTasks, HMRs, Alerts, and Compliance reports as required.
  8. Proper preparation of hazardous or chemically treated caging and waste and or animal carcasses for disposal at the ABSL 1, 2 levels and Chemical 1, 2 levels.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years of experience working in an accredited/ non-accredited laboratory animal facility and/or veterinarian technician program required. AS or BS and will be considered.
  • AALAS technician certification at the ALAT level is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of animal care and husbandry, cleaning, and health monitoring of animals.
  • Skilled at identifying health concerns and how to report these without assistance, independent work, PDA usage, census, and proper charges, taking direction, following schedule, ability to work with both mice and rats.
  • Ability to work in an independent and organized manner with attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs, policies, and guidelines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate directly with management (good command of English language), check emails daily and communicate via emails to Management when necessary.
  • Ability to stay calm and orderly when an emergency occurs, able to distinguish problem and prioritize tasks needed to be completed.
  • Ability to multitask daily tasks, easily adapt to changes in schedule without issue.
