General Statement
The Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Microbiology and Cell Biology at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana invite applications for a tenure track position at the level of assistant professor with expertise in single particle cryo-electron microscopy and/or tomography. The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized research program with extramural funding, to deliver courses in the molecular life sciences at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to participate in professional and university outreach and service activities. The position includes access to the University’s Tecnai T-12 and Talos Arctica/Gatan K3 instruments. The candidate will join an active structural biology group with expertise in X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, NMR and mass spectrometry. MSU maintains a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with research programs focused in multiple areas across the molecular life sciences, including pathogen microbiology, host/pathogen interactions, metalloproteins and metals in biology, innate and acquired immunity, neuroimmunology, virology, cell and developmental biology, biofilm microbiology, environmental microbiology, biophysics, metabolomics, proteomics and materials science. A Ph.D. in the molecular life sciences or a related field is required at the time of appointment, and postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities
As a tenure-track faculty member in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Microbiology & Cell Biology, the successful candidate will conduct research activities and establish an independent, vigorous, externally funded, nationally competitive research program. Duties also include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in areas of science that are of mutual interest to the Departments and the candidate, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in appropriate departmental and university service functions and collaboration with other faculty and departments to enhance programs at Montana State University.

    The Program
    The Department
    Chemistry and Biochemistry
    The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montana State University (MSU) is a vigorous, research-active department with strong interdisciplinary collaborations. Research thrusts of the Department and University include structural biology, biophysics, bioinorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, nanomaterials, optical spectroscopy, and energy research. The Department is composed of 18 tenure track faculty, several research faculty and approximately 80 graduate students. The Department grants Ph.D. degrees in both Chemistry and Biochemistry and also has a strong tradition of undergraduate participation in research. The Department’s research building (built in 2008) houses shared instrumentation including a 120 kV cryo-capable T-12 Spirit, a 200 kV Talos Arctic transmission electron microscope with Gatan K3 camera, macromolecular x-ray diffractometer, NMR and Mass spectrometry facilities, high field and pulsed EPR, CD, femtosecond laser spectrometers, microscopes, FTIR spectrometers, steady state and time resolved emission laser spectrometers, molecular graphics. Laboratories within the department also have access to a high performance research computing cluster (Tempest) for single particle analysis and tomographic computations and a large-scale high performance data storage system (Blackmore) for storage of microscopydata sets. In addition, MSU is connected to the very broadband network system (vBNS), providing very high speed internet access to facilitate remote data transfer from national cryo-EM faciilites or to national supercomputer sites.     Microbiology & Cell Biology
    Microbiology & Cell Biology (MCB), combines expertise in pathogen microbiology, innate and acquired immunity, cell and developmental biology, biophysics, neurobiology/neuroscience, host/pathogen interactions, biofilm microbiology, and environmental microbiology. The department offers undergraduate degrees in microbiology, biotechnology, and cell biology and neuroscience, and graduate degrees in microbiology and immunology, and neuroscience. The department is housed in the Cooley Labs, Leon Johnson Building, Barnard Hall and the Health Sciences Building. The department contributes significantly to the Center for Biofilm Engineering and Thermal Biology Institute. Montana State University has both small and large ABSL-2 facilities and an ABSL-3 laboratory. MCB currently consists of 23 tenure-track, ~50 graduate students and >600 majors. Research expenditures at Montana State University are approximately $120-$130 million per year, of which ~$12-13 million are housed within MCB. Current research programs are funded by NIH, USDA, DoD, NSF, DoE, NASA, EPA, Montana Agricultural Experimentation Station (MAES) and various private sources. The Department offers a dynamic research and teaching environment with state-of-the–art facilities for biochemistry, flow cytometry and advanced microscopy, histology, and small (including germ-free mouse facilities) and large animal research. The University supports comprehensive cores in metabolomics, proteomics, and genomics, and has recently been awarded funding to establish a Cryo-EM Core facility.
