Position Summary
The Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS) at William & Mary is seeking a numeric modeler in the field of coastal ecosystems to work with Dr. Y. Joseph Zhang within the Center for Coastal Resources Management. The investigator will join ongoing projects involving the development and application of numeric models to coastal hydrodynamics and water quality processes. Research activities will contribute to development and implementation of the next-generation seamless ‘creek-to-ocean’ forecasts based on the SCHISM modeling system.
Position responsibilities include interacting with graduate students and visiting scientists, working closely with collaborators on ongoing projects, and developing new, independent research consistent with the goals of the coastal systems modeling group.
The position will be located within VIMS’ Center for Coastal Resources Management in Gloucester Point, VA, but may involve collaboration with investigators at other locations.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • At the time of appointment, the successful applicant will have a PhD in an environmental science related field (e.g. marine science) or in a computational related field (e.g. physics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics).

EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES:
  • Evidence of strong quantitative skills
  • Evidence of experience in numeric model development and scientific programming
  • Broad knowledge of coastal and estuarine ecosystems
  • A record of peer-reviewed research and scholarship commensurate with experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of experience and demonstrated skills in numeric modeling using unstructured grids, particularly in ocean/estuarine systems.
  • Evidence of experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • One or more of the following skills: Parallel programming and scripting languages, strong background in biogeochemical processes in coastal oceans, uncertainty quantification or data assimilation.
  • Experience with the SCHISM model is highly desirable.
Conditions of Employment
  • The initial appointment is for one year with re-appointments of up to three subsequent years possible, contingent on satisfactory performance and funding availability.
