Description

The Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University seeks to recruit and retain an Assistant Professor of Practice of Biology who will have the opportunity to contribute to our vibrant education and research missions.  The Department of Biological Sciences is comprised of diverse research areas ranging from structural biology to ecology and evolution and biology education. The Assistant Professor of Practice position will teach courses for majors and non-majors, and will have opportunities for scholarship and service. We invite candidates with a demonstrated history of evidence-based teaching and innovation as well as scholarship in biology education in higher education settings. Applicants with research in student learning and/or teaching expertise in biology including data science, modeling and simulation, and quantitative biology are preferred. Successful candidates will be able to interface with and contribute to departmental and institutional initiatives in these areas. The person in this position will have the opportunity to contribute to teaching in existing courses in our core curriculum and is encouraged to develop a course in their area of expertise, including a course which will broaden access to research for undergraduates (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience).

At Purdue University, Faculty of Practice have a 9-month appointment and are tenure-track faculty positions with pathways to advancement and promotion to Associate and Full Professor of Practice. The Assistant Professor of Practice will be able to become a member of the graduate faculty and mentor graduate students. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to evidence-based curriculum and take advantage of several professional development opportunities, apply for external funding, as well as internal funding programs to support inclusive and equitable teaching through the IMPACT program run by the Center of Instructional Excellence, the CURE – Purdue Program, and the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentoring, Assessment, and Research (CILMAR).

Education

Candidates must have a PhD in Biological Sciences or other closely related field.


Experience

Basic science or biology education research related to student learning of biology, especially related to quantitative biology, data science, and/or simulation and computation. Postdoctoral experience in biology education research to augment disciplinary expertise is preferred for candidates whose dissertation work did not include biology education research. Evidence of scholarship in biology education and dissemination of findings are preferred.

One or more years of teaching experience in biology preferably as the instructor of record with evidence of reflective, instructional innovation and employing equitable teaching practices.
