SUMMARY:
Western Wyoming Community College (Western) invites applications for an adjunct instructor in Communication. Courses are available both online and at the Rock Springs, Wyoming campus, and duties will consist of teaching no more than 9 credits per Fall/Spring semesters and no more than 6 credits per summer semester via the institution’s learning management system. Responsibilities will include supporting Western’s Guiding Principles and upholding the mission of a comprehensive 2-year community college.

Successful candidates will teach courses in the Communication program as needed/assigned; teach in a variety of environments and modes (e.g., team-taught, daytime, evening, online, hybrid); assess students in light of the institution’s goals, program’s goals, and each individual course’s goals and objectives; respond to students in a timely fashion outside of class; develop good working relationships with discipline-related professionals in the College’s service area; and be active in one’s field of expertise.
 
Preferred candidates will be able to teach Public Speaking and/or Interpersonal Communication in the Face-to-Face and Online Formats.
 

We expect this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective, and competent manner, as well as strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide quality instruction to students in assigned courses, including, but not limited to Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and Intro to Persuasion.
  • Provide quality learning experiences for all students in accordance with their needs and abilities, while maintaining the basic integrity of the course’s standards and objectives.
  • State clear objectives and criteria in each course syllabus (utilizing the approved syllabus template); follow the Curriculum Committee’s guidelines regarding course syllabi; integrate appropriate Western Goals for Student Success into each course; evaluate students’ performances considering these objectives and criteria; utilize common assessment exam questions and report results in a timely manner.
  • Teach courses in a variety of environments and modes as required, complying with ADA expectations. Courses may be offered in the fall, spring or summer semesters and on varying schedules (i.e., 7- or 15-weeks), and may meet during the day, evening, weekend, or online in Rock Springs or at one of Western’s outreach centers. Instructors new to online teaching and learning will be required to work with Western’s Instructional Designer.
  • Design and implement effective learning processes for students; provide feedback on student improvement in attaining the College’s Learning Goals.
  • Learn to communicate clearly and effectively using the college network system, including the e-mail and calendar system, MyWestern, Canvas, and Word processing; integrate learning with technology into the classroom as appropriate.
  • Refer students to the resources in the College Learning Center, Peer Tutor Center, NetTutor, Library, Mustang Success, and Wellness & Accessibility Center.
  • Submit syllabi, student evaluations, grades, and other required information in a timely manner.
  • Regularly check email and respond in a timely manner to School Chair, Department Facilitator, etc.
  • Participate in annual Adjunct In-Service, all Departmental assessments, Title IX and other trainings.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Communication or a Master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate level credit hours in Communication.
2. Knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of the teaching of Communication courses on a post-secondary level.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and administrators.
4. Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship and to teach a diverse group of community college students.
5. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT:
For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities may be acceptable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

1. Experience using active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.
2. Demonstrated teaching excellence at a community college.
